X factor fever gripped the country again on Saturday and Sunday night for the second live show of the series. Here’s the WhatSheWears.ie rundown of what was hot (and not) over the weekend.
Whitney Houston made a comeback appearance after 10 years out of the limelight but had an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction. She wore a beautiful silver ball gown where the straps at the back became visibly undone.
Danni Minogue
Judges Cheryl and Danni have very different styles. We are now two live shows into the series and both women have worn the same style each Saturday – Danni in a long ball gown and Cheryl in a short mini dress.
Danni’s dress was a black floor length gown, custom made by Ralph & Russo £2,900. If you really insist on having this dress, you can contact enquiries@ralphandrusso.com. Otherwise, check out the black ball gowns in Debenhams which are under €200 and you can add you own gold sash – a la Gok Wan – from a haberdashery.
Minogue changed tack on Sunday night by wearing a super short pink dress dress and a hillbilly mullet hair style, which was achieved via a hairpiece.
Cheryl Cole
Cheryl is someone we usually admire style- wise but when she performed live on stage to promote her new solo single on Sunday night, unfortunately, she looked a real contrast to her X Factor judging outfits. Cole was dressed like a toy soldier in a red military jacket and cap and bizarre looking black harem pants with slits up the whole outsides of her legs. Her saving grace was her Alexander Wang buckle boots (€829.05, Net-a-porter).
Luckily, on Saturday night, when she appeared as X Factor judge, for the second week in a row, Cheryl wore an Atelier Versace dress. This time it was a structured red mini dress covered in red plastic discs. This is a super exclusive outfit which is part of the spring 09 haute couture collection created by Donatella Versace. Emma Roberts sported this very little red dress at the Met Ball in NYC last May. We loved her blue nails and spotted that Danni was bearing navy nail polish too.
Lucie Jones
Lucie wore a teal blue Preen bodycon dress on Saturday night very fashion forward jade green nail polish. This was THE statement dress last autumn winter and costs a staggering (£685, €750 euro) from Matches Fashion and we most recently spotted the one shoulder version of this dress on Cat Deeley while her co presented the Arthurs Day celebrations. With a bandage or body con top to the dress and tulip skirt, I felt that the dress didn’t suit the otherwise lovely Lucie.
Bandage and bodycon dresses are everywhere again this season but they only suit a slim figure. Teal blue is hard to find outside of the Preen designer circle, but Karen Millen currently have a beautiful bandage dress in black (£120, €132).
Lucie’s dress on Sunday night was much more accessible price wise – a black studded Lipsy dress with a sweetheart neckline (£65, €72). Lipsy is stocked on the ground floor of Arnotts Dublin, Dundrum Town Centre or online from Lipsy.co.uk. Lucie teamed the dress with a pair of cage heels.
Stacey Solomen
Stacey took Cheryl’s advice and changed her trousers from last week to a champagne and black one shoulder prom dress from Topshop. It wasn’t very flattering on her, but as she said herself “I can’t please everyone!”
Rikki Loney
Rikki Loney was voted off X factor on Sunday night. We really liked his All Saints Tuxedo jacket (€280) and loose tie combination. There’s an All Saints store in Dublin beside Powerscourt Centre, Kildare Village and in BT2.
Miss Frank
Plaid, check or tartan pattern made a comeback this summer, especially in plaid shirts. But alas, this Vivienne Westwood Anglomania plaid dress (£375, €411) did little for Graziella of Miss Frank who wore it with a biker jacket.
Rachel
Rachel was ever the trendsetter again this week, wearing all this seasons essentials – shoulder pads, leather trousers and a military style jacket. Rachel wore a denim military style Dorothy Perkins customised jacket with shoulder pads and sequinned detail on her shoulders. We thought that she really looked amazing and was seriously channelling the Rihanna look.
Coupled with her designer garb as Rihanna tends to do, Rachel also mimicked this muse with dark lips – a beauty trend that turns up annually just as the temperatures start to drop: Rachel wore her Blackberry coloured lipstick with attitude on Saturday night.
If you’d like to master the dark lip look you can choose from several options; at the higher end of the scale you’ve got Giorgio Armani lippie in Black Plum (€25) whereas Mac has one for about €15. Topping our list of favourites however, are the lip gloss tubes from Maybelline Colour Sensational Lip Colour in Plum Perfect (€7) and Revlon’s Matte Lipstick (€7) in Wine Not—both lovely shades.
Rachel looked amazing in her Balenciaga leather trousers (£765, €838). Luckily you can buy a similar pair from M&S (£35, €39) which are faux leather but skinny cut and have added stretch to give you a perfect fit.
