Top 5: Wrap Cardigans

By Jennifer Ennis

Looking for a new wardrobe staple this season? Look no further than the wrap cardigan. As seen on the Pringle, Paul Smith and Twenty8Twelve runways in London last month, the wrap cardigan offers style, flexibility and dare I say it – comfort.

From luxury brands to high street stores, a large variety of styles and colours are available to suit everyone and budget. The beauty of this cardi is its ability to be so versatile – you can wear it with everything. In the throws of recession, an item that can bring you from work to a party with a complete different look is worth a mention.

This wear-with-everything essential can be worn in five ways:

  •  An open cardigan (looks great with a vest top and jeans)
  • One side wrapped over the other shoulder (gives a great layered look)
  • Simply tied in front (great to hide tummies)
  • With a belt (for instant glamour)
  • As a one shoulder top (ideal for parties)

Narrowing it down to a Top 5 was quite tough with so much choice in the shops right now.

1. French fashion house BCBGMAXARIA are on trend this autumn with their purple silk wrap cardigan. Available from My Wardrobe for €171.60, it even comes with its own instruction booklet showing you different ways to try it.

2. Victoria’s Secret has a luxury cashmere wrap cardigan titled ‘The Soft and Sexy Wrap’. It comes in ten different colours from black to baby pink, and is currently at a reduced price of $39  so grab it quickly while you can.  Taking shipping to Ireland into account ($28) this cardigan works out at a total of $67 or €46. An absolute bargain for a luxury item like cashmere!

3. H&M have so many cardigans to choose from this season but their jersey wrap cardigan in a range of colours especially caught our eye (€22).

4. Ladies looking for a sleeveless option should check out Mark & Spencer’s linen blend cardigan. Available in indigo and mocha colours, it looks great with a shirt and trousers for a smart day time look. Available from Marks and Spencer and shops nationwide.

5. Lastly, Tommy Hilfiger’s Corine cardigan is a smart, sophisticated investment suited to all seasons. Available for €200 from Tommy Hilfiger online or stores (Tommy Hilfiger flagship on Grafton Street, Dublin or from Tommy Hilfiger at Brown Thomas nationwide).

Whether you splash out or grab a bargain this season, don’t be afraid to experiment with colour and style – with a little help from your wrap cardigan.

I have 5 wrap cardigans in different colours from BCBGMazria.. from their Soho branch in NYC- all around $ 170. They are just fab.. and really cosy in the Winter . the last time I spen $ 300 I got $ 100 off so was a good deal.

Key is to hand wash carefully as they tend to wear quite quickly..
