When investing in a winter coat, it’s worth considering a coat that will still be stylish after one season. After a scout around and some sneak previews, here are our favourites:
Cocoon shape
The tastemaker’s favourite for autumn winter 2013, wear with skinny trousers to balance out the look.
Double breasted Coat
A chic coat for the girl who likes the classic style – this double breasted coat is a throwback to the 1950’s. Wear with knee high riding boots. Top pick: Orla Kiely at Arnotts (€595 also comes in mustard) – favoured by Kate Middleton.
Tailored coat
For a fitted coat, Hobbs have the best offering this season. Their minimalist Celine-style seperates look clean and grown up. Top pick: Blue coat £199 Hobbs
Cape
Capes are still on trend for autumn winter 2013. Choose a classic colour like black which will last you a lifetime. Top picks: Black cape with a leather trim at Mango (€99) and Boohoo.com belted cape (€38) which comes in tan or black.
Black coat
Some girls simply want to invest in a good black coat. Top picks: Peaked lapel coat COS at BT2 €175 (also comes in red) and dropped shoulder coat from Peter O’Brien at Arnotts.
Crombie Coat
If you’re into borrowed-from-the-boys style, you can’t beat a crombie coat. Timeless. Top picks: Navy crombie, Peter O’Brien at Arnotts. On the high street, River Island.
Ladylike coat
If your style is classic opt for a lady like or skirted coat. Top picks: Yellow coat, Peter O’Brien at Arnotts (also comes in black) and pink coat by Dior at Brown Thomas.
Pink coat
As seen on the AW13 runways, dusty Pink is the “in” colour this season but pastel coats are really tricky to pull off against Irish skin (you’ll just look pasty!). Avoid at all costs. Instead go for a bright pink. Top pick: Wool coat, Heidi Higgins.
Leather sleeved coat
For the girl who likes edgy style, try this navy coat with leather sleeves, D.Efect at Arnotts €540.
On the high street, River Island’s black sheraling panel coat with leather sleeves is a winner (£75/€90).
Coats on a budget
Penneys and Boohoo.com have a great selection of coats for under €100. I’m currently wearing a black Boohoo.com coat with pleather sleeves. Top pick: Boohoo.com pleather sleeved coats.
Military Coat
This style works well for a straighter figure to give you some curves, with the belt and pleating detail. Also good for the more flat chested gal, it draws the eye to the button detail. This is a great style that can be dressed up or down. Top pick: Military coat at Warehouse £95.
Faux Fur Coat
Faux fur is great for jazzing up an outfit on a night out or a glamorous occasion. Yeti coats are still popular and are a real statement piece. Top picks: Warehouse .
Parka jacket
For the taller lady who would like a more casual look, the fur trim hood adds a cosy feel to the jacket. Top pick: Parka from Boohoo.com €60
Leopard Print
Make like Kate Moss with a leopard print coat. Top pick: Awear, €90.
Red coat
Crimson was huge on the autumn catwalks. Look like a lady in red with this Alexis Coat €155 from Monsoon or large lapel red coat from Zara €119 for a masculine take.
Shearling Coat
Definitely an investment piece and if you can afford it, a shearling coat is the warmest coat you’ll ever buy and will never go out of style. Try Maje at BT2, Karl Donoghue at Harvey Nichols or root around TK Maxx for a discounted one.
Coat with Fur Collar
A fur collar is the ultimate luxe statement. We love this style from Irish designer Fee G at Harvey Nichols Dublin €378 and this black coat with fur collar from Zara.
Oversized coat
One for the taller female, this Helmut Lang coat from Samui in Cork is our top pick.
Houndstooth coat
A big trend on the AW13 runways, we found an easy-on-the-wallet style at Heatons €45.
Camel coat
The classic camel coat is a classic style back in force this season from designer to high street. The single breasted style is great for the larger chested gal. Top pick: Zara has the best camel coats this season.
Funnel neck coat
Keep out the wind this winter with a funnel neck coat. This cobalt blue style at Dunnes Stores tickled our fancy.
Trench coat
Macs or trench coats are always a great classic to have in your wardrobe. Invest in a Burberry trench for life if you can. Otherwise there are plenty on the high street such as this one at Dunnes Stores. Note – if you’re large chested go for single breasted coat styles.
White coat
Winter white looks chic. Top picks are this white coat from Supertrash at Brown Thomas Dublin (€330) which has leather collars and shoulders. For a chic white coat try Dunnes Stores (€30).
Puffa jacket
To keep out the winter cold, a puffa coat is the answer. If budget permits, invest in the cosiest one around – Duvetica uses only the plumpest and finest grey goose down to create its super warm coats. Top picks: Duvetica at Seagreen €595 and black puffa coat at Zara €139.
