Winter Coats Under €150

By Anne Marie Proudfoot

Although our winter coats and jackets tend to be an investment piece for the season, again this season there are lots of styles out there that won’t break the bank. With retailers slashing the prices, the sky’s the limit with what’s on offer.

When considering your winter coat, it’s worth considering a coat that will still be stylish after one season. Also, be sure to keep in mind what suits you. While styles, tastes and body shapes differ, ensure you get the fit just right.  Sleeve lengths too long or short, or shoulders that are too big for your size (excluding the 80’s look) can look sloppy and take from your coat. So if it doesn’t fit, leave it sit!

Even if you’re considering spending more than our budget for this article, the below style tips apply to any coat purchase, big or small. After a scout around and some sneak previews, here are some of my favourites for under €150.

Doubled breasted Military Coats

This style (from ASOS £90) works well for a straighter figure to give you some curves, with the belt and pleating detail. Also good for the more flat chested gal, drawing the eye to the button detail.

This is a great style that can be dressed up or down -the lovely khaki colourway has a  black contrast detail.

Blanket Coat, Oasis (£90)

This is a great style for the more curvaceous woman with belt closing. If you are large chested, the V opening is also flattering for your figure. The asymmetrical hem works well for an hourglass figure too. Love the check fabric and raw edging, its perfect for this style.

Waterfall leather jacket, Awear (€120)

This trendy curved hem waterfall jacket sits neatly on the hips. If you are petit, this short style is good for you, the ruffle detail at the front also distracts from the more petite chested. The tan colour is so on trend. The leather in this jacket is really soft and at €120 doesn’t break the bank.

Faux Fur jacket from Oasis (€106)

Love this yeti style jacket from Oasis, pictured far right. Great for jazzing up an outfit on a night out. This will work well on the taller of you ladies as it is mid thigh length, the more petite of you may end up lost in it!

Khaki parka with fur trim hood from River Island (£74.99)

For the taller lady who would like a more casual look, check out this parka style from River Island, seen on the left. The fur trim hood adds a cosy feel to the jacket.

Shearling Coat from Zara (€99.95)

The shearling coat has to get a mention when talking about this season must-haves. Team this faux style from Zara with a pair of palazzo trousers for a luxurious Riviera look.

And now for the more classic looks for a steal…

Camel coat , Tesco (£40,  €46)

The classic camel coat is back in force this season from designer to high street. At €46, you can’t go wrong with this one from Tesco. The single breasted style is great for the larger chested gal. Add a thick brown leather belt to cinch in the waist and add some more interest to this style.

Rosette Belt coat from H&M (€34.99)

I love the added detail of the rosette belt to this classic style (pictured centre), a great look for dressing up an outfit. You could also change the belt and add a leather option for a more day look.  The neutral putty colour will go with lots of colours and it also comes in black.

Puff sleeved Mac jacket, H&M (€29.99)

Macs are always a great classic to have in your wardrobe, and this burberry-esque style from H&M is a great update of the classic styling. It also comes in a beige colour with polka dot lining and has the added bonus of being machine washable. As with both H&M styles the prices are fantastic!

Caring for your winter coat

Remember, when you bring home your new purchase to take good care of it:

  • Soft leathers hung on coats stands can tend to get an imprint from the hook if left there too long.
  • When on a night out, wrap your coat inside out if you’re leaving it on a chair or couch, especially if it’s cream!
  • Get yourself a lint roller; it keeps your darker coat looking sharp.

So kick into action and wrap up in style this winter!

Dear What She Wears, Could I make a small layout suggestion for your posts?. I really enjoy reading them but think that an image of each item you are referring to should follow the text – i spend a lot of time scrolling up and down the page – and sometimes you refer to products (as above with Tesco Camel coat) – but there are no images at all, making it difficult to decide whether it’s worth me tracking it down!
    Many thanks.

Thanks for the feedback Volume & Gloss. I’d usually link to the article but the Tesco camel coat is not online (you can see it over on our Tesco feature, http://www.whatshewears.ie/index.php/2010/09/tesco/ it’s the last photo in the gallery.
