Celebrity Fashion Collections

By Siobhan Lam

Whitney Port, the endearing star of the MTV reality series ‘ The City’ has just launched her very own fashion collection called Whitney Eve. I know what you’re thinking, not another celebrity fashion line?  The very recent past would suggest that celebrity + fashion (do not necessarily) = success; just look at what happened with Lindsay Lohan.

Her collaboration as ‘artistic director’ with French label Emanuel Ungaro ended in disaster, the critics ripped the heart-splattered collection apart and Lindsay barely made it down the runway to take her bow before scarpering back to L.A.

Another celeb we love to hate, ‘The Hills’…er star… Heidi Pratt, launched her ingeniously named Heidiwood fashion line last year which was promptly dismissed as “hooker wear” and disappeared so fast that we didn’t even see it on this side of the Atlantic!

Whitney Port at Alila

But let’s not paint them all with the same tarnished brush though; Whitney’s collection is actually very strong. It has a fun, retro theme running throughout and for a high profile fashion line, it isn’t wildly expensive. Decide for yourself, it’s exclusively available for your viewing/spending pleasure in Alila Boutique on Drury Street in Dublin 2.

There’s a metallic and candy pink coloured party dress which is deliciously fun at €350 and perfect for that Christmas party. However if that’s too pricey for you, her super cute pink and black bow-belts are an affordable €75. Wear the belt with a little black dress you already own and hey presto; it will make a perfect outfit for Saturday night! The collection certainly reflects the vintage aesthetic that Port favours and you can easily imagine her wearing all of the pieces in the range.

Elizabeth and James by the Olsen Twins

One of my favourite labels, ‘Elizabeth and James’, happens to be the creation of star twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Despite their dubious acting beginnings, these ladies have managed to cross over into the realm of fashion with great success.

The label defines the new New York chic – a look that the girls themselves work so well; it’s all about simplicity on the bottom half and masses of volume and drama on the top half – and always accessorised with crazy bed hair.

The Olsen’s tend to use unusual fabrics and prefer to keep the palette muted and dark – giving the pieces a unique and gothic feel. They also try and keep the shapes quite androgynous, resulting in ridiculously cool pieces such as the ‘Melvin’ military skinny pants (€315, Brown Thomas) which I desperately need, or the delicious off-the-shoulder ruffle top (available in aubergine and black, €230). The wear-ability of the range has not gone unnoticed; Natalie Portman and Hayden Panettiere (pictured left) are frequently snapped wearing the label, not to mention Whitney Port herself.

If those fabulous fashions don’t rock your boat, never fear! There is more. Celebrities that usually shy away from media attention are even getting in on the act.

Model and Cambridge student Lily Cole is co-conspirator on a new collection of eco-friendly knitwear called “The North Circular” which uses the wool of rescued rare Wensleydale sheep which is then knitted by a team of dexterous grannies!

As well as this, Brangelina (aka Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) have been working on a snake-inspired collection of jewellery called The Protector with the luxury brand Asprey for the past year.

So, whatever you want this Christmas, be it an eco-scarf,  a snake-headed ring or a shiny new party dress; there is so much choice at the moment and all made by your favourite celeb… what more could you want?
