Top 10 Tips for a Whiter Smile

With the rise of the selfie, these days there’s so much emphasis on one’s smile and teeth resulting in many people whitening their teeth, getting braces or even veneers. I had braces – clear train tracks- for 3 years during my mid twenties and it is probably the best money I have ever spent on my appearance. I still have an internal retainer behind my front top and bottom teeth.

Ever since I’ve gotten my braces off, I try to take good care of my teeth by seeing a dental hygienist every six months for a clean and polish -I go to Beechwood Dental in Ranelagh. The hygienist had to teach me how to brush my teeth properly and they say that going to one regularly can reduce tooth decay and trips to the dentist- and boy do I hate a trip to the dentist!

The hygienist also recommended that I brush my teeth with an electric toothbrush and so I ditched my manual toothbrush for an Oral B Braun electric toothbrush, which I bought years ago in Tesco. As well as brushing with Sensodyne Complete Protection toothpaste, the hygienist encourages me to floss using dental brushes to clean the cravices between my teeth – for this I use ‘Tipee’ brushes which can be found in most chemists – though I don’t do this as often as I should! The final step in my ‘brushing my teeth’ regime is to use a mouthwash after brushing and flossing.

If you don’t want to endure braces or the pain of getting veneers, there are plenty of other ways and products to improve your smile including teeth whitening, which I have not tried yet.  Read on for ten top tips for a better, whiter smile :

  • Wear a bright shade of lipstick. A pink or blue base will really enhance the whiteness of your teeth and smile. Avoid lip colours with orange or yellow undertones, as these can make your teeth look discoloured. for a blue based red lipstick, the ones which work well for me are Rimmel ‘Diva Red’ shade 500 and Chanel Rouge Coco in shade 426 Roussy.
  • Berry lips are a big trend for Autumn/Winter ’15, and also a great colour for whiter teeth. If you are not a fan of strong colours try a lip stain instead of a lipstick.
  • Did you ever notice how much whiter your teeth are when you have a tan? A great way to brighten up your smile is to add a touch of bronzer. Apply bronzer to the cheekbones, forehead, nose and jawline.
  • Highlight your Cupid’s Bow to draw attention to your lips, make them look fuller and fantastically kissable.  You can use a highlighter product for this- I use YSL Touche Éclat.
  • Use natural colours on the eyes, such as warm golden browns. These colours are a great contrast to a bright smile.
  • Eat strawberries, as these summer berries contain malic acid, which is a natural enamel whitener.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months. Once the bristles are worn down, your toothbrush is not cleaning your teeth properly. If you use an electric toothbrush you can buy a new brush head for them.
  • Avoid tea and coffee directly after brushing as your teeth are more porous and prone to staining. Wait at least an hour after brushing to have your morning fix.
  • Quitting smoking will improve the whiteness of your teeth and make your smile shine. Nicotine contained in cigarettes stains teeth faster than almost anything else.
  • Try LISTERINE® Advanced White as part of your beauty regime. Studies show that your smile will be whitened after two weeks of using it.  It costs €5.99 for 500ml and €9.99 for a 1 litre bottle. Use 10ml (two teaspoons) twice daily for 60 seconds after brushing your teeth.

LISTERINE® Advanced White ambassador and TV presenter Lisa Cannon (pictured above getting her makeup done by Paula Callan of Callanberry makeup, commented on the new addition to her beauty regime: “In my line of work my teeth and smile are constantly on show, not only to those around me but to all the viewers at home watching me on their TV screens. White teeth help my confidence to shine through in each and every smile, ready for any camera close up. As I get ready for one of the most important days of my life (Lisa is getting married in September), I want him to see the big and bright smile I will be wearing from ear to ear’.  Lisa uses Listerine as part of her daily beauty regime and says that “It is as important as cleansing and toning my skin when I wake up in the morning, and after a long day before I go to bed.”
