Accessory Report: Wedges

By Siobhan Lam

Ever present for the past few summers, wedges are one of the key foot wear trends for spring summer 2010.

The rise of WAG’s brought more consequences than we had initially anticipated – such as the female obsession with attaining and maintaining that subtle tangerine skin tone. As the WAG’s reign diminished, so did our desire to be like them and the things that they had come to represent. We strove to distance ourselves from such things for fear that we would be mistaken as a ‘WAG’ or worse still – a WAG wannabe.

One such victim of the WAG fallout was the wedge, the WAG’s had embraced the wedge – specifically Terry de Havilland wedges –  the heavily embellished and metallic ones became synonymous in particular.

Wedges were so vehemently embraced by WAG’s because they were much more comfortable than high heels and yet gave the same great illusion of leg length – the very reasons why we should be wearing wedges this summer.

Designer Wedges

Designers from Dior (pictured right) to Miu Miu featured them on the Spring/Summer catwalk for this year and if its good enough for Mr Galliano, then its good enough for me! He focused on lady-like wedges, with delicate strapping and beautiful scalloped edges whereas Miu Miu keep theirs quite traditional with a multi strap style and raffia platforms.

Wedges come in a multitude of styles and there are so many options out there at the moment from spats inspired vintage pairs to simplistic sporty wedges.

Natalie Portman’s Style

The modern epitome of lady like glamour – Natalie Portman is frequently photographed wearing black wedge heels. Staying true to her signature style, she tends to keep hers quite simple.

To pull off Natalie’s shoe look at a prudent price but with the same sophisticated guise – look to Aldo. The ‘Mignogna’ wedges are simple with an almond toe and a single ankle strap for support, the wedge costs £70 and is available in camel or black.

If you’re lucky enough to be a size 7, Office have one pair of these Emporio Armani black leather on sale  for £95.

Vintage looking wedges

For a similar look with a slightly vintage twist – look to the new rising star of footwear, Tabitha Simmons. This is Simmons first collection and she clearly knows what she is doing having consulted for the astounding Alexander McQueen.

Simmons’ Bunty suede wedge pumps (pictured left) from net-a-porter are exquisite and would work wonderfully in any stylish gal’s wardrobe this summer and are worth ever cent of their €844 price tag.

Looking for a trainer or a runner with a wedge heel?

Then the ‘Twist Buckle Wedge’ (€110) from Ash is for you (available at Office).  Described as “military meets sporty feminine”, these distressed wedges would work perfectly with a pair of tailored shorts for rushing about town this summer. Victoria Beckham has been known to wear them.

Pixie Lott wore a pair of Converse All Star Wedge Hi (shudoo.co.uk) in her Mama Do video.

Floral wedges

If you prefer something a little more romantic, Topshop have the most adorable pair of floral wedges. The ‘Wilma Meadow Wedge Sandal’ (£60) looks just as pretty as it sounds and with a surprisingly appropriate heel height (for Topshop!) would work all the way through summer.

Metallic wedge heel

For a pewter metallic snake wedge heel, look to Office for these, our editors pick of the day in the wedge stakes. They also come in black.

With all that’s in store right now, why wedge you not?
