Accessory Alert: Watches

By Gillian Brett

As Paris Fashion draws to a close, everyone has been talking, tweeting and generally gushing about what the fashion show attendees were wearing. One trend in particular that caught our eye was the number of people sporting attention-grabbing watches.

There aren’t many people who can afford to buy entire catwalk looks but a good watch is the perfect way of adding a touch of luxury and glamour to an ensemble.

Whatever style is your signature, a watch perfectly personifies their owner in a single accessory: chic and professional, quirky and fun or super-sporty; see our top picks from each style below (all photos are in the gallery below).

Chic and Professional

Chanel J12: This was Chanel’s first unisex watch and a style that has reached iconic fame with its clean cuts and fusion of masculinity and femininity. Available to buy in Brown Thomas with prices starting from around €2,800.

Casio: Less of a splurge but just as elegant, classic Casio watches have remained authentic and fashionably relevant since their original design more than 20 years ago. Available from €25 in American Apparel.

Quirky and Fun

Marc by Marc Jacobs: The Marc by Marc watches feature kooky characters, cheeky graphics and vibrant straps and dials. The new collection features innovative watches that are presented as necklaces and bracelets. Purchase them online at Net-A-Porter.com or Asos.com at around €240.

Swatch: The recent Swatch and Jermey Scott collaboration is a match made in fashion heaven. Jeremy Scott is reknowned for his kitschy and ironic designs (remember Jedward’s winged high-top trainers?!) and Swatch are the ultimate brand for quirky timepieces.

Also check out their new animal print watches with striking neon faces, allowing you to effortlessly tick off two of this season’s top trends.  Available from €50 at Swatch Grafton Street and Blanchardstown branches and the Swatch concession in Arnotts.

Sporty Watch

ToyWatch: TOYWATCH: A lightweight, oversized plastic watch, inspired by high design timepieces, the TOYWATCH has become the “it” wristwatch among fashion tastemakers including style maven Michelle Obama. Other fans of the brand include Sienna Miller and Jessica Alba.

Available in a rainbow of colours they retail from €125 and are available in Brown Thomas and BT2 in Dundrum Town Centre.

Breo: Despite being surprisingly inexpensive, Breo watches have become a celebrity favourite and have been spotted on the wrists of Ashlee Simpson, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas and David Beckham. A true ‘health freak’ favourite they are constructed from a semi-precious material called tourmaline, which means this watch may even help improve your health. Plus, their slim design makes them perfect for wearing while exercising.  Retailing at just €19.68 they are available in a kaleidoscope of colours on Asos.com and Next.co.uk.

Masculine watch

The oversized watch trend is one that has been eagerly adopted by fashion’s insiders of late: Rachel Zoe, Nicole Richie, Blake Lively and Olivia Palermo have all been spotted out and about with large, statement watches dangling from their dainty wrists.

The trick to this trend is that the masculinity of an oversized face or large cuffed straps makes the wearer’s arm look comparatively more feminine and slender.

Calvin Klein: In a sea of masculine influences, this is our favourite.  Ck Concept by Calvin Klein, €220. Available from the Calvin Klein concession at Arnotts.

Vintage

Olivia Palermo, said at London Fashion Week just past that the one item she can’t live without is a gold vintage watch –a vintage Rolex in her case – a good investment piece she reckons.

So, what do you think… which is your one to watch?

The Santos de Cartier watch from Cartier is amazing and is available in a number of different sizes. At the price of a couple of mortgage payments it is an utter investment but it is bound to become a family heirloom.

Wow, now that’s a serious watch Orla!
