Ask the Stylist: Tights

Tights on the AW12 catwalks, from L to R: Vivienne Westwood, Blumarine, Burberry and Chanel.

The chilly weather is here which means it’s time for all those cosy things we love about fashion at this time of the year: cashmere scarves, woolly knits and, of course, tights! Tights are the perfect way to transition your skirts and dresses to cold weather wear. But how can you get the most from your hosiery?  Check out these styling options, all inspired by the Autumn/Winter 2012 catwalks!

Coloured opaque tights

Coloured opaque tights are big news season and are perfect for making a bold statement while keeping out the chill. Take your cue from Vivienne Westwood who coordinated burgundy coloured tights with other accessories in the outfit, such as belts and scarves, and team them up with wool and tweed suits – great for breaking up the dull of formal office attire.

Tights are also ideal for reinventing your favourite summer pieces for winter – simply compliment an existing shade in a printed dress or tunic with a pair of coloured opaques from DressmyLegs (€12.95) to look like designer Anna Sui,  who used cobalt, orange, pink and lime green tights to complete her collection.

Style tip: If you don’t think you can pull off bright colour combos, go for the same colour tights as your shoes (or closely matching shades), to make your legs look a mile longer.

Patterned tights

Patterned tights are a perfect way to update your wardrobe with high end trends without breaking your bank balance, and this is where you can be really creative with your winter styles: whether it’s trendy tweed tights for a countryside a la Burberry look, a houndstooth patterned pair for the bold and daring among us or some baroque-inspired tights to compliment your favourite party LBD.

Style tip: Remember to keep the rest of your outfit minimal in terms of textures and patterns and let your legs do all the talking. Look to Chanel who styled sparkly silver tights with their otherwise prim boucle suits – a simple way to seem dressed up without putting in a lot of an effort!

Ribbed tights

Ribbed or cable knit tights are never out of fashion and are perfect for those who find coloured and patterned tights too bold for their taste. Ribbed tights in dark colours such as charcoal grey will add interest and texture to any outfit, yet are forgiving at the same time.

This season Burberry teamed them with dark shoes to compliment their AW12 collection for a classic long-elongating look, while Blumarine paired white cable knit tights with matching cream skirts, jackets and coats to create a “fresh off the piste” look which you can achieve with these ribbed tights (€12.95) which come in black, light grey or white.
