Shopwatch: The Body Shop

The Body Shop’s makeup artist Karim Sattar was in town recently and I was invited along to see him in action recreating their new summer makeup range, Nomadic Goddess.

Karim joined The Body Shop 10 years ago, with a vast experience of fashion shows and editorial photo shoots, where his work has been published in key magazines such as Vogue and Marie Claire.

They had sent me the new Big and Curvy Mascara (€15.40) earlier and by the time the event came around I hadn’t tried it out (I was saving it until my current one ran out – you know the way mascaras can dry out?).

But boy was glad that I waited as Karim showed us a trick that if you bend the mascara brush 180 degrees and apply mascara side to side (as opposed to up and down with your mouth gaping open), it’ll go on much better.

Another trick I learned which he used to stop your eyes streaming while applying eye makeup is to swallow. Yes, talk a gulp and put two fingers on your throat while you do it, and the tears stop. Brilliant!

While the tanned, bronzed look which is part of this makeup range, wouldn’t be something I’d go for, I have to say that the eye makeup and shimmers waves grabbed my attention.

Karim transformed the girls present  with jade green shades or metallic’s greys from The Body Shop’s Italian Baked Powder Eye Colours (€14, pictured bottom right), each with two shades that can be applied either wet or dry to take eyes from fresh and natural to sexy and intense, with plenty of smoky eye looks.

For the intense look, I asked him what he would recommend for me  – I am normally unadventurous when it comes to eye makeup and go for a classic look – strong lipstick and black eyeliner.

Secretly crestfallen that he didn’t do smoky eyes look on me (as I can’t pull off this look on my own EVER), he said that my skin was gorgeous and I didn’t need much makeup!

And so he set to work using only The Body Shop Shimmer Waves in blush 02 (€22. Pictured top right. It also comes in bronze 01). It’s a palette of five colours with various shades of pinks and a white/champagne and can be used as a bronzer (in my case, a blusher) and eye shadow.

Karim went on to apply it to my eyes, lips and as a blusher, in the most fantastic way that I will never be able to reproduce. The whiter shade was used as a highlighter under my eyes and he finished off with a few coats of Big and Curvy Mascara, again, with his “bent” mascara as described above.

My base is one I had on earlier myself, Rimmel Match Perfection in 103, True Ivory.

And so you see the result (that’s me pictured above). I’m no nomadic goddess or sultry eyed siren but I kind of like the cool, fresh and natural look that I ended up with.
