Country and Western style is sure making a comeback. Between Gwyneth Paltrow playing a country singer in the movie Country Strong and securing an album deal off the back of it, to this season’s Ralph Lauren spring summer collection, there are denim shirts, fringed waistcoats and cowboy boots around a plenty.
One country singer that bucks the trend however is Taylor Swift, who shows us how to work weekend wear with panache.
Red pleated skirt, Zara €39.95
Striped T-shirt, River Island €15
Nude peep toes with bow detail, French Connection €114
To channel Taylor’s cute skirt and top look; go for her striped top only if you have a smaller bust – otherwise, opt for a scoop neck top, such as this River Island Black and white stripe top (€15). The button detail on the shoulder will help those will slight shoulders too.
The Zara red skirt, which, by the way has the handiest of side pockets, can be worn two ways – firstly “a la Taylor Swift “- with bare legs and nude shoes in summer and right now, with thick black opaque tights and black ankle boots.
Style Tip: This season is all about showing off your waist. Make like Taylor Swift and tuck tops and T-shirts into high waist skirts, to show off a tiny waist. The same rule applies to maxi skirts, so get tucking those tops in!
P. S The number 13 written on her hand is optional – “I paint this on my hand before every show because 13 is my luck number, for a lot of reasons” and added “I was born on the 13th. I turned 13 on Friday the 13th. My first album went gold in 13 weeks.”
Yellow beanie, Topman €15
Duffle coat, Promod, €34.95
Tan brogues with mid heel, Office €78
Topshop, our best kept secret, went stateside two years ago and ever since has been slowly creeping into every US celebrity’s wardrobe. Taylor Swift is one such fan and even though this Toppers navy duffle coat of hers is no longer in stock so if you’re looking to do her duffle, Promod currently stock a similar one.
The tan cross body bag which Taylor wears in both photos is a Ralph Lauren Collection bag (£1,800) but don’t be thrown by the price point, as there are lookalikes EVERYWHERE on the high street right now. Our favourite? The Mischa Barton Cross Body Bag (€72, at Littlewoods).
Finish off the outfit with a yellow beanie from Topman and mid heel tan coloured brogues from Office and voila, you have weekend-casual nailed with two effortlessly chic outfits that are casual, yet look pulled together.
