Ask the Stylist: Colours for a Summer Wedding

Dear Ask the Stylist

I’m living in Asia and a bit disconnected from the colour trends at home so I need your help! I’m coming home for a wedding in August and need to buy a new dress…any idea what colours I should be looking for? Thanks!!!

Wedding season is in full swing already and even though we can’t upstage the bride, looking amazing is still top of every female wedding guest’s list. This summer the three things to look for are bright colours, neon and lace.

Bright colours

A little bright dress is summer’s answer to a LBD and hot pinks, emerald greens, royal blues, vibrant yellows and true reds would all work for an Irish summer wedding. Go for a fluid style with a Grecian shape, like this Lanvin SS12 dress pictured.

We love this DYNY hot pink dress (€353.97, pictured above centre) which you could team with red accessories (think oversized red snakeskin clutch, bib necklace or costume jewellery and Zara minimalist heels).

Maxi dresses are still popular (just check the colour of the bridesmaid’s dresses before you buy !) and our top pick for a show stopping entrance are the jewel coloured ones or vintage inspired maxi dresses over at Ingenue London (an Irish company based out of London).

Neon is a big trend this year and you can wear neon orange or neon yellow loud and proud if you’ve got a tan – just opt for neutral accessories. These Topshop platform sandals will go with any colour and the ankle strap will give additional comfort.

If you don’t go the Grecian or maxi dress route, the other school of thought is demure or vintage.  Hems have taken a dive along with the economy and midi lengths – think Mad Men – are all the rage. With that, vintage style dresses and vintage buys are more popular than ever.

Lace and demure

With Kate Middleton’s wedding dress and style choices, lace is having a moment and there are some gorgeous lace or lace overlayed dresses in the shops right now. Even Hollywood actresses like Emily Blunt are showing up in lace on the red carpet (spot the midi hems too, pictured far right) which would also work well for a wedding.

Hats are back with a bang (the fascinator is dead) so you could opt for a fabulous headpiece as the centrepiece for your outfit. Our favourite milliners are Martha Lynn, Aisling Ahern and Fiona Mangan but you’ll also find some headgear to order online.

Rent a Dress

If buying doesn’t suit you, you can always RENT a fabulous frock. Order online 10 days before the wedding and get it shipped home from Girl Meets Dress. Otherwise, pop into Covet in Powerscourt Centre Dublin (dress rentals from €80-€150) for an on-the-spot dress rental, they’ve got the most amazing one-of-a-kind designer and vintage dresses that no-one else at the wedding will be wearing!

Good luck and happy shopping!
