Having just returned from a friend’s wedding on a tropical island, I’ve heard that the past two weeks has seen glorious weather at home so I’m really hoping that I haven’t missed the summer.
Thinking positively forward, it may be time to bring out the summer hat, so here are some on-trend options which we have in mind.
Straw Hat
Newly brunette actress Kate Hudson (seen here bottom right) wears an oversized straw hat to shield her from the bright sunshine at a charity polo match recently. It had a wide brim and she added a touch of glamour with oversized sunglasses and statement earrings.
Copy Kate’s summer chic with an original coloured straw hat from Miss Selfridge (€21) or a chocolate coloured floppy one from Debenhams (€21).
Alternatively, you can opt for a trilby, which, although smaller in size than a straw hat, is also an elegant option.
Trilby or Fedora
Cavalli, Dior and Hermes are all known to have shown off Trilby Hats as their featured accessory in their catwalk shows. But first of all, we need to ask what exactly is the difference between a trilby hat and a fedora hat?
There seems to be a huge difference in opinion and primarily this boils down to the fact that trilby is essentially a British term, whereas fedora is preferred by our friends in America.
Lock & Co, a London based Hat Company founded in 1676 and official hatters to the Royal family, actually classify the two items as different. They believe a trilby to have a shorter brim which is angled down at the front and slightly turned up at the back. The fedora has a much wider brim which is more level (just picture the hat worn by Indiana Jones and you’ve got it).
No matter what it’s called, the celebs with the best taste usually stick to wearing classic colours of black, brown, and grey in felt material. But come summer time, they tend to switch to cream, nude and tan coloured ones made of straw or raffia to keep cool.
Even Britney Spears avoided the sun (pictured here) on a trip to Europe, although, she may well be just shielding herself from the paparazzi.
Lindsey Lohan has been riding the Trilby trend since 2007. Seen here on a trip to France, she embraces summer with an ivory coloured one.
If you’re in the mood for a trilby, we’d like to point you in the right direction:
