Erika Fox of retroflame.blogspot.co.uk is a Galway girl with a romantic and free-spirited sense of style. Not one to fear stepping outside the box, she seamlessly teams her high street favourites with vintage finds by way of a little DIY. She gives us an insight into Galway’s best boutiques and why the right shoes complete every ensemble.
How would you describe your personal style?
My style varies each day. It’s a mixture of girly, vintage & DIY.
Who or what inspires your look?
I gain a lot of my inspiration from blogs & style sites such as Lookbook.nu. I love street style & seeing how others put things together.
In what ways does being from Ireland influence your style?
Well firstly, the weather is a huge influence. I’m in college in Galway and there really are only a few days throughout the winter months where I don’t have to wear a jacket or coat. The weather here can really limit your outfit choices. As well as this, I think that some people in Ireland are quite conservative in the way that they dress – scared to stand out from the crowd, I guess. This is why I love going to places like London because over there -anything goes!
Is there anything you would never wear and why?
Crocs.
What are your favourite current trends, why do you like them and how are you wearing them?
I really like the peplum trend at the moment. I know it’s not for everyone but if you wear a peplum skirt/top correctly, it really can look amazing. I recently purchased a floral peplum skirt in Zara & I absolutely love it! I’m also obsessed with pleated skirts. They are the perfect summer skirt, paired with a simple top or jacket & I’ll definitely be bringing a few with me to NYC this Summer.
Name one go-to piece in your wardrobe and tell us why you love it?
My gold glitter Jeffrey Campbell Litas. I got them a few months ago as a present and I honestly have gotten so much wear out of them. They brighten up any outfit I wear them with and I always receive so many compliments when I have them on.
Where are your favourite places to shop in Ireland?
I have a few favourite vintage shops such as Public Romance in Galway and I also love to shop in thrift stores.
What are your favourite fashion websites/blogs?
This changes regularly, but at the moment I love lulutrixabelle.com, kendallca.blogspot.com, struttlamode.blogspot.com, lightsdrivemysoul.blogspot.com and ftbh.blogspot.com. All these bloggers have quite an eccentric style & I love that! They dare to be a little different and as a result, provide so much inspiration.
What is the first thing you notice about someone else’s outfit?
The accessories and the shoes.
What do you spend the most on and the least on?
I spend the most on shoes (by far) and the least on jeans.
What fashion rule do you always break?
I always wear prints that probably shouldn’t be worn together, but I love how striking it can be.
What fashion rule do you never break?
I’ll NEVER wear tights & open toe shoes !
