Style City: Barcelona

So you’re keeping your weekend away quiet as it may be seen as insensitive these days? What’s with that anyway ? (The frowning upon us going off on a well deserved break).  Despite the grim onlookers, here are some top tips for visiting this Mediterranean city; we’ve done the footwork for you so that you can get maximum shopping time out of your break.

What she wears’ favourite shops

Custo Barcelona

This much loved international brand is a must see on any fashionista’s city break. Custo was set up in the 80’s by two Spanish brothers who were inspired by the LA scene. We love their colourful prints, especially their wrap dresses (pictured) .    7 Placa Olles, Tel 0034 93 2687 893

Iguapop

Iguapop clothes shop come gallery is located in El Born district. For cool street wear by various designers, you’ll also find urban art and magazines if you have room in your bag for quirky presents. 15, Comerc. Tel 0034 93 100 735

Blanco

We know you’ll be first to Zara and Mango’s doors (especially as they are always that bit cheaper than home).  If you’re seeking cool office wear, be sure to check out our favourite Spanish high street chain- Blanco. Structured shirts, skirts, dresses and accessories, this shop has dressed us for work since we first discovered it in 2001. At least no one will be wearing the same gear when you get back to the board room.

Shopping districts

Passeig De Gracia

This boulevard is Barcelona’s designer strip, home to Armani, Chanel and Adolfo Dominguez.

El Born

Leave the touristy Barri Gotic, which is the area around the main drag (Las Ramblas – watch out for pick pockets everywhere!), cross over Via Laietana to find El Born district. Here you will find a treasure trove of hip boutiques, accessories, and interior design shops. Beatriz Furest Barcelona and Como Agua de Mayo are two of our favourite boutiques.

El Raval

Barcelona’s boho barrio (district), get on down to El Raval, formerly a red light area. The whole area has been revamped and now is home to vintage shops, especially along Carrer de la Riera Baixa.

Stay

Ok, so you may think their shoes are too “out there” and masculine looking, but they are from here after all and the Camper Hotel is one of the most hip places to stay in town.

Eat

Espai Sucre, 53, Calle Princesa, Tel 0034 93 2681 630. “Sugar space” is one of a kind, in that it only serves desserts! Indulge with your girlfriends over a “cafe con leche” in this very cosy, very trendy setting for €40 for a filling, set menu.

On the right is Andres Velencoso, a native of Barcelona, seen here modelling Versace at Milan Fashion Week. Did we mention that he’s Kylie Minogue’s boyfriend?

OMG I love the Born district, such a hip place. Am always looking for new funky places to stay in BCN, so thanks for that tip. It’s a long way from Calle Viladomat where I lived as a student!

Can anyone tell me the name of the Custo dress in the picture from the article above last March 2009 – love it – trying to track down where I can buy it! Thanks, Gill

Hi Gillian, The Custo dress is from their SS 2009 collection from back when I wrote it in March – so no longer on their website or outlet. However, I’ve found it on ebay.ie for you, (CUSTO BARCELONA long sleeve V neck dress) in a size 4 (US size I think but ask the seller, UK size 8)and a lot cheaper even with shipping than its original price! see http://short.ie/b9zcjf. Bummer that they’ve only one size though :(

Hey may I quote some of the content from this blog if I link back to you?
