Shopping: Best Buys of 2012

As 2012 draws to a close I decided to look at the things that I’ve bought or experienced which gave me most joy in 2012. Hopefully lots will see me well into 2013 too.  Here are my top 12 favourite buys from 2012.

1.    Curly Blow Dry
2012 was the year that my hair finally grew long and I fell in love with the curly blow dry, especially when done by Brown Sugar. From €30,

Curly blow dry from Brown Sugar & wearing my boucle biker with gilet on top

2.    Boucle Biker jacket
This modern take on the Chanel boucle jacket was huge in 2012. I love wearing a jacket which gives my top half a bit of structure and balances out my shoulders with my hips so this burgundy one from Warehouse hasn’t come off my back since I bought it earlier this year.

3.    Beauty Bootcamp
This was one of the best girly days out ever spent, learning how to style your hair and apply your make-up like an expert whilst getting tips from Ireland’s top hair and makeup artists. Leonard Daly’s makeup tips have stuck with me and still make me chuckle. €88,

Pied a Terre shoes @ Arnotts

4.    Pointed stilettos
Pointed pumps are said to elongate the leg and as a shortie, this year I went mad for black pointed stilettos. Great to dress up jeans too. My favourites are from Zara and these patent Pied a Terre from Arnotts, €160.

5.    Ingenue London dresses
From the Irish girls who brought us Chica boutique, Ingenue London are now only open in London (they had a shop on Dublin’s Wesbury Mall until August 2012) – but luckily us Irish shoppers can still shop there online. They pull off the best lookalike for Kate Middleton’s engagement dress and great, flattering wrap dresses and maxi dresses (with sleeves!).

Wearing Ingenue London (centre)

I wore Ingenue London to the Scottish Fashion Awards and to a slew of summer occasions. This red vintage style dress is a favourite. From £89 a dress + shipping.

6.    Mih jeans
This year I searched for the best pair of jeans and though I found some great pairs on the high street, investing in a pair of MiH jeans is one of the best style decisions I ever made. The Paris mid rise is a skinny cum straight legged jean that’s cropped, so it works well with flats as well as pointed pumps. No wonder all the celebrities love this label .  £143 online at and approx €175 in BT2.

Clarks riding boots & Mih "Paris" jeans

7.    Riding Boots
Yet another piece of footwear on this list but I love to wear a pair of classic riding boots with a pair of skinny jeans. This Clarks pair is my weekend footwear staple,  Knight Hood riding boot  (£99/€120).

8.    ‘The Hollywood Secret’ Facial
When it comes to facials, the only one to do the job well is Hollywood’s favourite skin infusion, by Intraceuticals. It’s like a natural facelift and a great alternative to Botox which hydrates, firms and tightens the skin. It gives such a great “on camera” affect that all the 2012 XFactor contestants had it administered weekly.  €150 at Revive, Milltown Road Dublin 6, T: 01 2604781, .

Wearing a Joanne Hynes necklace

9.    Statement necklace
Probably the accessory I’ve bought most of in 2012 (from Zara, Penneys and Anna dello Russo for H&M) and it always manages to dress up the dullest of outfits. My biggest splurge was this one I bought at a Joanne Hynes sample sale which I wore to see Lady Gaga in concert.

10.    EMU Australia boots
Wearing heels all day is hard work and there’s nothing I love more than coming home to a pair of flats and when the chill hits, sheepskin boots. There is no better (or warmer) feeling than slipping your feet into a pair of fluffy boots in the evening and this EMU Australia pair (€229)  have kept my feet cosy around the house for the past year.

11.    Mimi’s Staycation
A girl sometimes needs a spot of beautifying and I’ve gone to Mimi’s Beauty Room in Sandymount a few times this year (have you tried their eyelash extensions ?) as they came up with the best deal ever (which they’ve continued right through the year – I even availed of it before Christmas) – the “Mimi’s Staycation”. It includes full body Rockstar tan, file & paint on hands & feet, an eyelash tint and eye brow shape) all for €70. Mimis, 6 Seafort Ave, Sandymount, Dublin 4 T: 01 2071916 .

Cliff House Hotel, Armore, Co. Waterford

12.    My travels this year took me to London, Belfast, Prague, Nice and Portugal but one trip which I really treasure was a spa break in January to the breathtaking Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore, Co. Waterford. A must-return-to and luxurious way to beat the winter blues!

What were your best buys in 2012? Let me know in the comments.

Wishing you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year for 2013!
