It’s hard to imagine, but we’re fast forwarding a look at the upcoming autumn fashion trends already and Sheepskin is tipped to be as one of this season’s biggest trends.
With that in mind, we look to two must-have sheepskin pieces for your wardrobe once the cold sets in.
Sheepskin Lined Boots
A die hard UGG fan or not, these babies certainly keep you warm all winter long. The solution for many is to wear them when house bound, as they can, for some, appear ugly outdoors (read the debate here: Ugg boots, rate them or slate them?).
Hot on their heels are Emu Australia who is dedicated to creating quality sheepskin footwear, merino wool and leather apparel for men, women and kids. The company pride themselves on the strong use of all natural products and have a slightly cheaper price point to their Ugg cousins. (Prices range from €125 to €295 for the boots compared to €250 and a waiting list for Uggs).
Sheepskin Jacket
Not just a favourite of Only Fools and Horses, the sheepskin coat is back with a bang this autumn winter and was prominent on the Burberry AW 10 catwalk.
Root hard enough and you’ll find one in your dad’s wardrobe or in your local charity shop and the high street has indeed started to fill up with everything sheepskin – from capes to gloves.
This year Christopher Bailey introduced a new ‘must-have’ to our Autumn/Winter wardrobes – the aviator jacket. These sherling jackets, with all their belts and buckles – look as if they’ve just come off set from a WWII film but somehow still manage to be the most desirable piece from the catwalk this season.
Bailey teamed these tough jackets with ultra feminine lace dresses and leather boots. That contradictory combination of soft and strong works fantastically and is exactly how these jackets should be worn – so keep those pretty summer dresses out. Just make sure to layer them with an aviator jacket.
My favourite piece though is the Dotty P aviator from Dorothy Perkins, pictured right (£49, €80) which, luckily for us females, is more biker than Dellboy. Where the Burberry equivalent would cost you ten times this price, the Dotty P aviator has a half jersey sleeve which means that it’s arm slimming while still allowing you to move. Need we say more? The DP aviator jacket is on my AW Must Have list, think it’s streets ahead of any other high street version that’s emerged so far! Will probably be awful on me in real life 😀
Any word on when it’ll be available, either online or in-store?

Lynnie, nah don’t think like that! I think it’s all in the trying on. It will be in top stores (the bigger DP shops) and online end of September 2010

It looks cheap and nasty, nothing like a proper, quality shearling aviator. Buy the real thing from a leather retailer if you’re going to invest. Otherwise you’re just going to look like one of the desparate imitation herd.

That’s what fashion is all about – copying the major trends from the top fashion Houses and making them affordable for the high street. So most of us therefore who buy on the high street are part of the ‘imitation herd’. Not everyone can afford a couple of grand to buy the Burberry original. Or even a genuine leather version. High street stores these days do amazing copies these days so that ‘normal’ people can buy the styles they like. Don’t judge the jacket on just a photo. Plus not everybody likes to wear leather or other animal hide for moral reasons.
