Shapewear for the Party Season

By Ann-Marie Proudfoot of Proudfoot Style

I am sure with our current cold spell  you’re probably only thinking about pulling on your thermals, and keeping warm. Although the thought of dressing up with heels may be far from your mind, party season is fast approaching.  Our Christmas parties may not be as lavish an affair as they once were; but a girl still needs to dress up, doesn’t she?

With this in mind, let’s first talk about getting your underwear right and smoothing out those lumps and bumps. Here are some of my tips about dressing from the inside out.

‘Not without my shapewear’

Shapewear doesn’t have to look like a pair of Bridget Jones’s control underwear anymore. It can actually be sexy.  No more running to the loo when you get home to do a quick change into a lacy number, the lace has now been added. Yummie Tummie is a range of shapewear with a difference, the majority of which has been designed so you can show it off.

Yummie Tummie’s shapewear doesn’t roll down when you move and is also comfortable enough to be worn all day.  A friend of mine at a recent wedding said she nearly passed out with the heat; she actually ended up taking off her shapewear for fear of being peeled out of it later in the evening! Although it needs to be tight to do its job, just ensure you are comfortable enough to move around in it.

You also need to be aware of what shapewear is suitable for each outfit. I have picked some key styles that should cover and boost you for most looks:

Depending on your strapless dress, you have the option of wearing shapewear with the bra included or not. Flexees by Maidenform have designed a shapewear slip with a built in bra. It’s seamless to give you that all over smooth shape.

If you would like to wear your own bra you can wear the strapless slip from Yummie Tummie with the lace detail at the hem, and if your skirt lifts when getting out of the taxi you’ll have a sexy lace trim exposed.

Sheer fabric

For a dress with slinky or sheer fabric this shapewear slip will allow the fabric to flow over your smooth silhouette.

Waist cinching

To give you that cinched in waist and create an hourglass figure, wear a waist shaper with knickers included. If you are feeling a Lady GaGa moment coming on then wear them as outerwear!

But if you would prefer to just wear the waist shaper under your clothes then this one from Wacoal has really nice lace detail and looks a little sexy in a sheer fabric in a corset style.

Smoothing the bustline

Whether you are small or large chested, you want your bust line to look elegant and give it that lift or containment that it needs.

For us smaller chested ladies, try Wonderbra’s full effect bra. It will give you the ultimate boost – by two sizes! The bra is a mix of air, gel and foam and is seam-free for a smooth finish.  If you’re not into the double effect boost, Yummie Tummie have a bra push up that can be worn in addition to your own bra, but sits under it to give an extra lift.

Large chest minimiser

For the larger chested lady try the strapless minimiser from Victoria’s Secret. This baby will minimise and give a great smooth shape that can be worn with strapless or asymmetrical styles.

Shapewear not for you?

If shape wear is not something you require, this versatile multi way plunge bra from Wonderbra can be worn 100 ways!  So, whether strappy, halter neck, cross back, multiple straps or low back, this bra will cover all.
