What She Wears: Scarves

By AnnMarie Proudfoot

If there is one thing in your wardrobe that you can’t have too much of, besides underwear, for me its scarves, and with a recent count of my own I realised I am a faithful lover of this accessory!

Whether wearing it for style, warmth or religion, the scarf tends to be an essential in many wardrobes. They are a great way to be more daring with patterns and colours and can transform a boring outfit into something more unique.

With such an array of fabrics, colour and textures to choose from, and lots of ways to wear them, you just can’t be without one!  Prada has even gone a step further to ensuring you always have one by your side by adding a keyring.

Ways to wear a scarf

Just remember if you are wearing a patterned top, opt for a plain colour. Alternatively a patterned scarf jazzes up a plain outfit.

For some the question begs, how do I wear mine? Here are some alternative ways to wear your scarf.

• With a long scarf wrap around your neck twice and then add a skinny belt over it around your waist. It can be worn with a top and skirt or over your mac.

• Wrap two scarves together, maybe a plain and patterned. This is a great option with a plain T-shirt and skinny jeans.

• Wear it as a hair band with the long tied end hanging over one shoulder or a square shaped scarf as an overall headscarf.

• A thin scarf can be folded lengthways and worn as a belt with jeans or as a waisted belt to break up a black top and skirt.

• A silk square scarf can be worn like a tie with a dropped knot.

• If you want to be a bit more experimental, a large square scarf can be worn as a halter top in the summer.

• Tied on to your bag to add a little colour or pattern. It can be any fabric you like but silk scarves usually work best because they are light.

• The must-have snood is great for keeping you cosy and having the practicality of a hood. You can also create your own snood by sewing together the end of a regular scarf.

Why not check out what’s available in stores at the moment? Here a some of my favourites:

Silk floral scarf, Awear (pictured centre), €10

Red chain scarf, Awear, €12

Tie dye snood, ASOS (pictured left), €22.74

Alexander McQueen Skull scarf (pictured right on Nicole Richie), €180, Net-a-porter

Ikea have a scarf holder that you can hang in your wardrobe, great way to store and view your new range. So the only remaining question now is why knot?

I have begun to love scarves in last few years.. my first splurge was 2 Pucci scarves… normally costing around €250 each but bought in Centuty 21 in New York for a 1/3 of that (there are some cute ones in TK max from Moschino and Valentino if one wants to stick to designer brands… all a great prices)

This year I fell for the Alexandre Mc Queen scarves.. as did most people,.. and luckily enough my sisters bought me one for my birthday – just the week before he died… a silk blue and white one… as they sold out almost immediately afterwards in BTs.

The trouble with these nice scarves.. is trying not to lose them….they are so light that invariably get left behind !! so far so good !!

I’m loving Nicole Richie at the moment, I love the way she is just letting her fashion design and style get the column inches rather than her skinniness and private life!
Good on you Nicole, more talent less celebrity… if only the rest of the media would understand that that’s what we really want!

@ Mis jo jo – ooh sounds lovely, which colour A McQueen did you get? A collectors item now you know

@Whisty I know what you mean. Love Nicole Richie these days too, her brunette look is lovely. and her Winter Kate clothes (bo ho) collection has gotten great reviews. I like a few pieces from her House of harlow jewellery collection too

Good buys in Century 21 Miss Jo Jo with the pucci scarves! I really like pucci accessories, love the clutch bags. That’s great to know too with the scarves in TK Maxx. Love finding bargains there.
I agree, Nicole Ritchie is much more attractive these days.

I love my scarfs, but always wear them the same boring way, so thanks for the tips! Most people pack away their scarfs when winter is over, but I guess they are year-round fashion items.
I think having a scarf for any travel (especially on a plane) is essential; blanket, pillow, eye-mask – endless uses!

  7. Miriam Says:

THANK YOU for the scarf hints … was about to clear mine out of the drawers BUT now I know i ccan never have enough … even need some more – lol !

  8. Claire Says:

I bought a light grey coloured scarf in Penneys before Christmas and I find that it’s a great colour against my face and I end up wearing it with everything. Have seen the same scarf ona few others too so obviously a popular choice! Though it’s great to see that there’s more than one way of wearing it :)
