After months of press junkets and mounting speculation, the Golden Globes kicked off Awards Season last night. Taking place in the sumptuous surroundings of the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, a bevy of Hollywood’s hottest stars strutted down the red carpet in all their finery.
New mothers Megan Fox and Claire Danes enjoyed what was possibly their first night of freedom, with both looking sensational in Dolce & Gabbana and Versace respectively. Adele, who walked away with Best Original Song for James Bond’s ‘Skyfall’ was resplendent in an all-black ensemble from Burberry’s Christopher Bailey.
For months now, the same names have been bandied about, with Les Miserables and its stellar cast tipped to win big this Awards Season and its headliners, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried, have been working the promotional circuit in only the finest couture. Tonight, Anne looked to Chanel SS09, while Amanda looked demure in Givenchy (not something usually associated with Ricardo Tisci’s creations).
While so many got it right, a few got it so wrong. Jessica Chastain, in Calvin Klein collection, was frumpy in a halterneck dress that possibly would have passed muster if it had not been for the tacky colour. Halle Berry has a figure most women would die for but her garish cut-out dress did little for it. And Lena Dunham, who has come into her sartorial own of late, chose an unflattering Zac Posen off-the-shoulder gown in a difficult shade which she very nearly pulled off!
Representing the British contingent once again were Sienna Miller, Emily Blunt and Michelle Dockery in Erdem, Michael Kors and Alexander Vauthier respectively. For a night when most dresses were surprisingly safe, these ladies were the very ones to lay down the style gauntlet.
Sophisticated if not a little safe, let’s hope all the stops are pulled out for the Academy Awards (aka The Oscars) come Sunday, 24 February.
