5 Minutes with Poppy Delevingne

Poppy Delevingne is a name widely-known within fashion industry circles, possibly not so much amongst the general public up until now. Many people may recognise the unique second name of that as belonging to supermodel Cara Delevingne, who happens to be Poppy’s little sister.

Poppy however, has her own career to her name. Having begun modelling internationally at the tender age of 18, she is now an industry veteran at the ripe old age of 26. A young ambassador for the British Fashion Council and Anya Hindmarch and newly-engaged, Poppy speaks to WhatSheWears.ie about her love of fashion and what her role as the face of VERO MODA means to her as she prepares for the next big stage in her life.

WSW: How does it feel to be famous for your personal sense of style – to be a style icon?

P: It is quite a shock, actually. First and foremost because growing up as a child I was such a tomboy, always naked or in dungarees; and I was never interested in clothes or anything like that. It was only when I began modelling at 18 that I really began enjoying fashion and reading any fashion magazine I could get my hands on, while developing a profound respect for designers, fashion and how to wear it. So when people pay me a compliment like that, I feel totally honoured. I wear clothes that make me inherently happy.

WSW: Your flair for style seems to come very easily and naturally…

P: Well, I never go out of my comfort zone. I never do anything that doesn’t feel natural to me. I wake up in the morning and I know what to put on – it’s my sixth sense, really.

WSW: You never feel you’ve made a mistake?

P: No, not any more. I’ve dropped way too many clangers for that!

WSW: The latest salute to you has been the December edition of British Elle, which praises you for your take on street style.

P: I think it’s very interesting. There was a moment when blogging and viral and street style became very “now”. And people turn their noses up at it, but it was something I instantly fell in love with, because I didn’t just want to see what was on the catwalk, but what was on the streets as well. That was far more inspiring than anything else, so street style is something I’ve always been fascinated by, and I love the pictures that the street style photographers take. I think they are immaculate and stunning, and they really capture a moment in fashion that campaigns and editorials don’t capture in the same way.

WSW: Who is your style icon?

P: I think Marlene Dietrich in the old days was pretty immense, and today I love Lady Amanda Harlech, because how the hell do you make couture look so easy?
