Paris Shopping Guide

It goes without saying that Paris is the number one city when it comes to shopping.  But, with so much variety, it can be hard to know where to start.

Fresh off a fashion-related fact finding trip, Gillian Brett shares her Parisian shopping secrets, from cool concept stores to incredible vintage boutiques and other must-visit spree-spots.

Everyone knows the Champs Elysees is traditionally the first stop for shoppers but duck down the narrow Parisian Streets of Le Marais and you’ll find the best vintage shops in the world. Forget the moth-eaten connotations you may have and think authentic Chanel, Givenchy, YSL and Hermes. Here are the absolute must-visit vintage shops in Le Marais:

La Belle Epoque, 10, rue de Poitou, 75 003 Tue-Sat 13h30-18h30. M° Filles-du-Calvaire.
This shop opened in 1996, way before vintage became popular, and it holds many time-honoured treasures.

La Jolie Garde-Robe, 15, rue Commines Tue-Sat 14-20 h. M° Filles-du-Calvaire.
Paris’ best-kept sartorial secret, this is the place to bag a real bargain.

Odetta, 76 rue des Tournelles, 75 003 Tue-Sat 12-19h30, Sun 15-19h30 M° Chemin-Vert.
For anyone who doesn’t enjoy the vintage trawl, this cute boutique offers a mix of “modern vintage” along with last season’s designer pieces. The newest addition to the super-trendy rue du Marché Saint-Honoré is n15.

The chic concept boutique houses a perfectly edited selection of brands from eveningwear options such as Temperley London and Lover, to daywear from By Malene Birger and Current Elliot right down to slick sportswear from Open City. Owner Natalia Tooke opened the store earlier this year and it has since become a number one destination for stylish women looking for a ready-made capsule wardrobe.

Finally – and I’ve saved the best until last here – no shopping trip to Paris is complete without a visit the fashion heaven that is Colette. After more then 15 years in operation, Colette is still the mecca for everything fashion and lifestyle related. In fact, it’s more like a shop-museum with its exhibition space, bookshop, and a cafe that includes a “water bar” serving more than 100 brands of bottled water!

And of course the main attractions are the clothes, jewellery displays and mouth-watering beauty counters. The coolest up-and-coming brands hang side-by-side with long-standing brands like Alaia, Valentino and Lanvin. It’s rare for any store – let alone a small, privately owned shop – to achieve worldwide notoriety, but by serving up rarefied fashion finds in super-slick surroundings, this international hub of pop culture is definitely my favourite place to shop (or at least browse if my credit card resists submission!) on every Paris visit.
