Finally the report you’ve been waiting for: what did the Hollywood stars wear to The Oscars 2009? The whatshewears.ie team are bleary-eyed today having stayed up until the early hours following the 81st Annual Academy Awards but are glad to report that it was all worth it. After much speculation around the “etiquette” of what to wear in the current economic climate, we were relieved to see that the glamour factor was certainly turned up a notch; safely confirming that fashion has, yet again, hijacked the Oscars.
Bows, belts and knots abounded
Tilda Swinton, Jessica Biel, and Amanda Seyfried were well wrapped up in delicate knots and oversized bows. Our favourite in this style though was Heidi Klum, who wore a stunning red dress by Roland Mouret and matching peep-toe pumps. Check out her massive silver and coral floral earrings which we think may have worked better with an up-do.
Sarah Jessica Parker wore John Galliano for Dior Haute Couture, an outfit she had planned for some time. Unlike Marisa Tomei’s Versace dress which “showed up” the morning of The Oscars itself, SJP wowed us with her barely mint coloured gown with cinched in waist and fairytale skirt – certainly a statement piece worthy of such an occasion.
Anne Hathaway worked the old Hollywood glamour look in an Armani Privé sequinned dress. She shimmered the whole way down the red carpet, her ring and bracelet alone worth €1 million. Anne – we salute your timeless glamour.
Plenty of fish-tail-shaped gowns swanned around flattering the figures of many. Though not a fishtail dress like the one she wore to the BAFTAS, Kate Winslet won again, and not just in the acting stakes. On trend with a one shoulder (asymmetric) dress, she never fails to dress for her figure. Last night Kate shone in a flattering, steel grey Yves Saint Laurent gown. We urge you Kate; please stick with your stylist because you got everything right on the night; hair diamonds and dress.
Not quite right on the night? The dresses that didn’t get our votes
Penelope Cruz, while wearing a similar gown to that of Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope didn’t get it quite right in vintage Balmain.
Beyonce – great to see you showing off your curves but gold on black emphasised them more than anything.
Mylie Cyrus -Although she was first to grace the red carpet, in fairness, we think that the scalloping on her Zuhair Murad gown was too much. The Topshop lookalike belt wasn’t very fitting for the red carpet either.
