Obsessed With: Yellow

By Linda Gallagher

Spring is finally here and with it comes a new season of fashion. One of the colours that featured prominently on the Spring/Summer 2010 catwalks was the colour yellow.

Designers used every shade and tone of the yellow colour palette to create stunning new looks with the highlights being Chanel’s lemon suits (left), Versace’s ultra bright minis and the oversized marigold ruffled tops from Stella McCartney.

Iconic French designer Sonia Rykiel has always been an advocate of strong colour and she has included lots of vibrant yellow pieces in her new knitwear collection for high street store H&M (which hit selected stores on 20 February). Stylish canary yellow sweaters with matching pleated skirts are accessorised with fun plastic bangles and crystal studded belts.(Prices start at €14.95 and go upwards.)

Arm Candy

The much anticipated Mulberry Alexa Bag (pictured top centre) has arrived in Brown Thomas. Named after Fashion’s golden girl Alexa Chung, this buttery coloured leather satchel style handbag with plaited handle is available in five colours and retails at €800.

Expect to see this years ‘IT Bag’ on the arms of the footballers wives and girlfriends at the World Cup Finals in South Africa in June.

Yellow Bikini

If you are planning your summer holiday NOW is the time to buy your swimwear when there is a good variety of styles and sizes available.

Dunnes and Penneys are fine if you want cheap and cheerful but for something extra special,  check out top swimwear designer Melissa Odabashs (right) current collection (her celebrity clients include Beyonce, Elle Mc Pherson and Sienna Miller).

Look every inch the Bond girl by the pool in her banana hued ‘Ýasmin’ halter neck bikini with tortoiseshell link detail (£135/€154).

Accessory wise, retro style coloured sunglasses are making a comeback.  Models sported 1980’s style yellow frames on the Lacoste runway and at the recent Harvey Nichols S/S 2010 fashion show.

Online company sunglasses.ie has a really cool Pepe Jeans pair in stock for €69.

Runners, sneakers and all sorts of sports shoes are a key fashion story this season. My holiday purchase will be the zesty yellow low rise trainers from Converse (£34.99/€40.00).

An alternative to sandals,  these Converse are ideal for running around town or walks on the beach. Utility style khaki shorts or white jeans would compliment them nicely.

Nail Polish Singer and avant garde dresser Lady Gaga created quite a stir at this years Grammy Awards when she turned up in a cage like Armani Prive dress and dip dyed yellow hair.  Howver, a less drastic way to buy into the yellow trend is by updating your nail polish.

My pick for Spring is Creative Nail Designs ‘Hot Pop Yellow’– a fluorescent yellow nail varnish from their Hot Pop collection (€10.75) – a similar nail colour was used in Jimmy Choo’s 2010 ad campaign.

New season, new scent. Replace your heavy musky winter fragrances with light fresh florals.

With top notes of violet, wild strawberry, vanilla and red ruby grapefruit, Marc Jacobs’ new limited edition ‘Daisy in the Air’ Eau de Toilette evokes memories of hot summer days. It also has the most beautifully designed bottle with a blue daisy stopper that would brighten up any dressing table (€49 for 50ml).

So for Spring, spread a little sunshine and wear yellow.

I’m terrified of yellow clothes with my traditional Irish skin. I’m sure there’s a shade out there somewhere for me! Though I’d definitely incorporate it in to an outfit through shoes and bags – love the Alexa bag.

A reader (Camilla) posted this to the Obsessed with Navy article. For the lady (Aoife) who finds it hard to get a shade to suit her, why not incorporate a little bit of yellow with navy and bit by bit you may find a shade that is right for u. Summer yellow with navy is a new kick to a nautical look.

If you want to wear the colour yellow but you are not sure of what shade to wear, try honey tones, they suit everyone.

Do you think tan or brown shoes go with yellow?

  7. Annemarie Says:

Hi Sarah, Tan would be good or nude.
