How to Wear the Nautical Look

I found myself invited along to the Volvo Ocean Race in Galway this week and had to have a second think about it because I realised I didn’t know what was appropriate to wear to such an event.

Considering my recent failed attempts at sailing and injuring myself in the process, my focus has shifted to how to look good on the shore.

The sporting sailor male type has a distinct look – deck shoes, tanned face, Gant (or other sailing wear) branded jacket and sunglasses, whereas the females, if not sailors themselves, usually show up to see if they get an invite onto The Green Dragon or the other beautiful boats that will grace Galway Bay from 23 May to 5 June.

I decided to go for a nautical look and what better fit for such an important event in the sailing world.  When Coco Chanel first experimented with navy strips on white, they may have been seen as a flighting thing. These days Jean Paul Gaultier has a sailor feel around his collections and the trend has remained strong decade after decade.

Luckily, the nautical trend is popular again this season so there’s plenty of choice out there for the trend’s key colours:  navy and white.  These block colours are usually teamed with striped (navy and white) tops, T-shirts or jumpers.  Breton Tops (white tops with navy horizontal stripes) are key to pulling off this look, find out more about them here.

Sailor trousers are such a quick and casual way to look nautical – even better if they are adorned by buttons along the pockets.

Red accessories are always a great compliment to a nautical outfit so I chose these red canvas wedges with raffia heel

Finally I settled on the following outfit:

Tall striped slouchy jumper, Topshop, €36

Sailor pants, Debenhams, €45

Red wedges, Bertie at House of Fraser, €28

Aviator sunglasses, Jigsaw, €39
