What She Wears: Maxi Dress

The Maxi dress has seen a resurgence this summer and to be honest, I’ve spent the whole summer looking for the Holy Grail – one that suits “shorties” ( I am 5.2” without heels) and can be worn both during the daytime and at night.

A maxi has got to be both comfortable and flattering, a pleasure to wear and something I won’t trip up in. Luckily I found it, the maxi dress of my dreams,  in  red jersey at Pepe Jeans (€20).

However, today’s post is not about me. Let’s look at how tastemakers from both home and away rock this summer staple.

Maxis for evening wear

Rachel Zoe

Naturally, the maxi dress works for evening too, just remember to glam it up with accessories (and lots of them).

Queen of the maxi dress look, stylist Rachel Zoe shows us how to do it by wearing a vintage red Stavropoulos dress with layered necklaces and bracelets from her collection with QVC (which, sadly for us, is only available Stateside).

To emulate her look, a designer option would be this beautiful red silk maxi from Austique (£380, Farfetch.com), or for keener price point try the Marilyn maxi dress from Chica (€245).

Pair it with a white Mongolian faux fur gilet (New Look, £29) or indeed a black one (Awear, €26.47).  And if don’t feel so Rachel Zoe inspired, wear the maxi solo, sans gilet.

Maxis for Daytime

Rochelle Wiseman

The Saturday’s stunner Rochelle wears, what is perhaps the most flattering of maxi dress styles. The cinched-in waist and one shoulder ruffle is flattering to most and if you don’t like this particular print (it’s sold out it was so popular), it also comes in plain grey (Lipsy, £50).

Glenda Gilson

The Amazonian Xpose presenter is quite a fan of Chica boutique (and shopping as you can see) and is pictured here wearing the Pada Swirl (Chica, €132). This strapless Maxi dress has a tie detail under the bust, and requires a good upper body to pull it off (note to self to do more press-ups !).

In Ireland I think that Chica have the best selection of mid priced maxi dresses I’ve seen – everything from floral and prints to evening glamour. Luckily they sell online too.

For those of us who don’t want to bare all, wear it with a cardigan in one of the colours of the dress or a cropped denim jacket (Topshop have a lovely one for €62).

So whether you go for the day or evening look, the maxi dress with leave you looking the essence of summer chic with any of these options.

I must say Glenda normally looks good but this maxi dress (multicoloured ) does nothing for her shape.

  2. Annemarie Says:

yes it swamps her a bit doesnt it? Perhaps she should stick to the short hemlines that are Herve Leger. She has the pins to show off after all!
