Style Hotel: La Minervetta Sorrento

Sorrento’s steep slopes and views of the Bay of Naples are breathtaking.

On a holiday to Italy, we splashed out and stayed at a boutique hotel called Maison La Minervetta which sits on a cliff overlooking Sorrento, where rooms start at €320/night. It’s a bit pricey but the sea views from the pool and sun terrace are to die for and the cool nautical decor is an interiors lover’s dream (see main image).

The rooms are all sea-facing with floor-to-ceiling windows to give you a full ocean panorama – you can even see the ferries passing by on their way to the isle of Capri. A continental breakfast is served on the terrace with a view of the Bay of Naples.

The hotel arranged a pick up from Naples airport (€90) to the hotel where, upon arrival, we were greeted by hipster couples enjoying the outdoor hydro massage tub, wooden loungers by the pool or chilling in the coffee-table-book-laden lounge, where each person looked cooler than the next despite their carefree summer regalia.

I can safely say that, to date, this is my favourite hotel in the world and was worth every penney saved and spent to stay there!

Eating out in Sorrento

There is no restaurant on site for evening dining at La Minervetta and getting to a restaurant involves a steep climb down stone stairs and then a short walk, but the local Italian eateries by the water’s edge are worth it once you get there.

For an upmarket dining experience, one evening we ventured into Sorrento itself to “Il Buco” which has earned it’s gastro stripes with one Michelin star and a reasonably priced taster menu. We booked in advance of our stay and opted for al fresco dining outside in the little cobbled area off the square.

You can use Sorrento as a base to explore the rest of the Amalfi Coast such as Positano, the stunning fishing village where The Talented Mr Ripley was filmed.
