Collection We Covet: Joanne Hynes A/W 2009

By Ingrid Hoey

While the rest of you were off toasting Arthur’s Day on Thursday 24 September, I attended the Joanne Hynes Trunk Show in Brown Thomas.

One of my favourite Irish fashion designers, Joanne Hynes was showcasing her latest Autumn Winter collection in a personal way. She walked us through her key pieces in her Autumn Winter collection and gave some tips on how to style them.

This was Joanne’s first year using leather in her collection and it was worth the wait. Joanne’s leather pieces included a chocolate brown capped sleeve dress (€480) with a large brown belt (in the softest of leather) and an armour leather jacket with strong shoulders and elbow pads (€630, pictured right), which is on my wish list for this season.

Hynes also has an amazing hand beaded dress (pictured here top left) which she calls the Guardian Angel Dress because of how powerful this dress is. She aptly named it as, when the dress appeared, the whole room gasped at its pure beauty.

Joanne’s statement bib necklaces include touches of velvet which, again, is also bang on trend for this autumn/winter. I have worn mine either over a stripy tee or with a black dress and it really can change the look of an outfit in an instant. You can see a picture of this bib necklace in my October Must Haves.

The Clinic actor Amy Huberman was with me on the night and she wore a midnight blue sparkly wrap top by Joanne Hynes which has touches of sheer on the shoulders. Needless to say I saw about four ladies purchasing the very same top! At  €240, it is an affordable indulgence worn best with black skinny jeans.

Joanne also has dresses and coats in velvet which, as we all know, has made a comeback this season.

I could go on and on about this Collection We Covet but it really has to be seen to be believed! View all photos from the collection and trunk show here.

I bought the Green Joanne Hynes dress with black straps and jewel bodice top, i want fab shoes but dont know what colour to go for, im in a real piggle? can you help??

Hi Natalie, I checked out the dress youre talking about and its gorgeous and quite ornate so best to keep your shoes simple. Your correct in not going for black as it would “cut off” your feet. Go for a nude (skin coloured) shoe, peep toe for summer, closed toe for year round. This keeps the emphasis on the dress and the shoe will blend into your leg colour, great for elongating the legs too. The best range I’ve seen are at Aldo and they have peep toes that look like Louboutins and closed toes that look like Brian Atwood, so all in all, amazing

    Hi Annemarie

Thank you so much for getting back to me and your expertise advise. Could i bother with you one last question, one you choose a colour pop clutch bag or would you keep with a nude clutch and get a facinator with some random colours in it??

    Thanks

Again, keep it simple Natalie, as the dress (esp with the bejwelled detail) is so ornate that the emphasis should be kept on that. so nice hair, but no fascinator (would take away from dress I think). a simple black clutch – leather or patent. Aldo has some fab long and slim clutches (I’ve no affiliattion with that shop, they just happen to have great shoes and accessories at the mo!).

I’ve looked at the photo of the dress again on http://www.joannehynes.com/ss10.html and in hindsight I think youd get away with black shoes too because of the black detail on straps and bodice. These would probably work well for winter too where you could wear the whole outfit with a cropped black jacket.
