Line We Love: Helen Steele

A Line We Love, What She Wears is as fascinated by Helen Steele’s illustrious creations as we are by her eccentric personality. Having burst onto the scene in early 2011 with her debut collection of jersey fabrics in the most intricate and abstract of patterns, Helen Steele has already established herself as the next big thing to come from Irish shores.

A true creative who prospered in the arts for years before finding her way to fashion design, Helen’s background sees her as a former member of a thrash metal band and an internationally successful commercial artist. After an artistic collaboration with fellow stellar Irish designer Joanne Hynes, Helen turned her hand to fashion design where she seems to have finally found her niche.

With her own unique sense of style – her rockabilly victory roll and undercut hair is now her trademark look – and the ability to carry off her own creations with aplomb (Helen is pictured above left at this year’s Showcase 2013 in the RDS wearing a tunic and leggings from her own SS13 collection), there’s more to this Monaghan-based artist than meets the eye.

Her creations are outlandishly stunning, full of hazy colours and jarred prints, with her paint splattered oversized t-shirts and leggings synonymous with the Helen Steele brand. Having expanded her AW12 collection to encompass cropped puffa coats and printed bomber jackets, her latest creations are bang-on-trend. The undisputed one-to-watch at this year’s Showcase in the RDS, her standout looks stole the show amongst a runway of chunky knits and subdued tones.

With a lifetime’s experience in the industry, Helen and her team have big plans for international expansion, beginning with London Fashion Week this coming September. About to go global, this is one designer to watch out for!

Availability: Helen Steele Designs are stocked in Arnotts and Costume on Castle Market Street, Dublin 2. For more information on Helen, find her on Twitter or check out her website.
