Beauty: He Shi Fake Tan

Everyone’s raving about the new fake tan He-Shi and as I was feeling pale and pasty this weather I thought I’d pop along to their launch to see what all the fuss was about.

Christine Bleakley, presenter of BBC’s The One Show wears it so I was immediately hooked in. When I arrived at the launch, the penny finally dropped. She’s from Northern Ireland and so is this product, born and bred. Bleakley is not the official face of He-Shi or anything, she just happens to like it. And you must admit that she looks well.

Personally though, I don’t like my fake tan “dark” so when I saw the He-Shi girl give the demonstration and saw that she was brown as a button, I was alarmed.

Having said that, when I applied it at home myself, it was a nice brown but definitely a mid-summer, “back from your holidays look” kind of brown. I received lots of compliments on a Saturday night out, with one chap (who normally knows my pale self), saying “You’re very brown”.

So I tried it afresh again today, after all the usual exfoliation, and missed a patch on the back of my arm. This was obvious within an hour and luckily I had my Sally Hansen instant tan (a tiny bit applied with a mitt) which hid it quite nicely.

Aoifs, a WhatSheWears.ie reader also tried He-Shi and here’s what she said:

It’s good and easy to apply but I got a shock first time I applied it as its quite runny! My mam tried it as well and put some on her legs (the worst place to take fake tan) and her legs looked great – really natural. It’s probably still a little bit dark and I don’t like being too dark – I’d definitely try the moisturiser version as it’s not as dark.

I still prefer the aul spray tan (who doesn’t) so I’m definitely going to try the spray version and see how it looks. Must find a salon that does it. Ooh and it definitely did have the fake tan smell the next day, though not too strong (they said it wouldn’t…).

The Verdict

Brownie points for :

Being an Irish product, good celebrity “endorsement”, summer dark bronzed look, application mitt and we’re both dying to try the spray tan version. Loved the compact bronzer and dainty bronzer brush which both fit neatly into a small makeup bag.  If you want to be Christine Bleakley bronzed, then He-Shi is for you.

Not for:

Pale and interestings (so when they say “suits Irish skin”, this is open to interpretation), non liquid lovers and those who like to see where their tan is going as they apply it. It’s slightly odd that it’s a unisex product, hence the name He-Shi, but perhaps that’s only to me.

He-Shi Stockists

Aoifs, if you’re looking for a spray tan, I’d recommend Wow Brown in Donnybrook. see http://www.wowbrown.com/ . They do discounts if you book in numbers (but dont have to go together) and sell self tan also. But the spray tan is gorgee, just avoid your face! some clever “tan commandments” on their website too
