What She Wears: Harvey Nichols SS10

Last week saw the unveiling of Harvey Nichols Dublin SS10 collection.

What was so niche about this fashion show was the production, which included a performance video detailing the creation of a dress with paint, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and forklifts!  The canvas theatre which was made to perform the video piece became the backdrop for the show, the  concept of which was based on the six day play by Austrian artist, Herman Nitch.

The collections which graced the catwalk saw designs by Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, 3.1 Philip Lim, Sonia Rykiel and Alice by Temperly (remember the scarf we ranted on about last week?). Check out some of the catwalk photos on our Flickr.

As always at these events, it’s nice to have a look around at the attendees too. And so, in true WhatSheWears.ie form, I took some style inspiration from the following fashionistas.

What: Navy is such a good colour on all shades of Irish skin and this dress is no exception. Louise looks demure rocking the “covered up arms” look (i.e. sheer) and even sports navy nail polish – a winter beauty trend I loved on Dannii Minogue last X factor and am excited to see again here.

She: Louise Loughman

Wears: This style reminds me of the Chloe navy mini dress with long sleeves (£448, Matches Fashion) which Victoria Beckham wore with flats recently. But it’s not – it’s a much nicer version with ruffle shoulder detail and sheer long sleeves from Warehouse (€78).

What: Sheer was certainly the preferred style option on the night but this outfit took it one step further and added subtle sequins. Such an outfit required minimal jewellery to pull it off and in this case, she did.

She: Helen Steele, the artist behind the show’s production

Wears: A royal blue sequin two piece from Harvey Nichols London which was a present from her husband. If you’re inspired by Helen’s look, a pair of Stella McCartney sequined peg-leg pants (€695, Net-a-porter) is just a click away.

What: As with the leather skirt, leather dresses are up there on our must have list for autumn winter 2009 (and where Ireland is concerned the weather pushes “winter” well into February/March). Luckily leather is a look that comes back on trend every few seasons too, so it’s always a sound investment. The leather dress is a bold choice not taken by many, but in this case the shape offers the perfect contrast to the material’s apparent toughness.

She: Colette Fitzpatrick, TV3 news anchor

Wears: While a real leather dress will certainly remind you of its presence once you read your credit card bill, I found an affordable (faux) leather one at Mango (£39, €45 on Asos).

What: The cool colours for spring are pastels and neutral khaki colours, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look edgy. If you want to add some spice to these muted shades, simply take inspiration from Sonya and wear it sheer and wear with leather, a cool adition which will “toughen” the look up.

She: Sonya Lennon, Off the Rails presenter

Wears: Top by Maje from Arnotts, leather sleeves by Ann Demuelemeester from Havana, a Vanessa Bruno skirt and Manolo Blahnik shoes.
