Party People: Harvey Nichols AW 10

Last Thursday I headed along to Dublin’s only Vogue’s Fashion Night Out  event. FNO is the brain child of Anna Wintour (Vogue USA’s head honcho who wears very large sunglasses at all the front rows) and is internationally organised by Vogue magazine with some 16 countries involved, including Australia, Russia, Taiwan, America, France, Italy, Turkey, The UK and Ireland.

Harvey Nichols Dublin joined in the global celebrations by staging its Autumn Winter Fashion Show, put together by acclaimed Irish artist Helen Steele.  Sultry models strutted down the runway wearing (temporary) nose rings and uber smokey eyed makeup.
Some of my favourite looks of the night, which reflect this new season’s key trends included:

New minimalism

I love the thought of wrapping up in a fur gilet this winter and found some style inspiration for how to wear one with this first look (pictured far left).

Isabelle rocks this Alice + Olivia faux fur gilet (€350) with a white stripe tank top and By Malene Birger black leather leggings (€670), an Abaco black bag (€710) and Opening Ceremony military boots (€390).

I’m glad to report that leather leggings, both real leather and faux, are EVERYWHERE at the moment, even in Penneys.

Lace with high waist shorts

The waist goes higher on shorts and trousers this season, as shown here with these black shorts on Yomiko which she wears with an American Retro black lace playsuit (€235) and Sam Edelman black stud wedge boots €240.  I’d swap the fishnet tights for a pair of black opaques, for a less racy, more wearable look.

Recessionistas looking to pull off this look, head to American Apparel for a long sleeved lace dress (€54) which you can wear with Urban Outfitters high waist shorts (£140).

Leather Shorts

And on the subject of shorts, leather ones are big news this season as all things leather continues in vogue (TV3’s Collette Fitzpatrick wore a leather dress to the Harvey Nichols SS10 show).  There were also some beautiful high waist Christopher Kane leather shorts worn by another model (not pictured) which were paired with a silk blouse.

The seasonal shade is orange, which, unfortunately is not an easy colour to pull off by typical (I mean pale) Irish skin types but L’Or (pictured second from left) works this Stella McCartney orange satin one shoulder dress to perfection. The train on this alone would show stop any party or red carpet! Make like an autumn leaf and copy the catwalk look by  wearing an orange dress with nude shoes  – or for a daytime look, wear it with black pumps and opaque tights. We found the perfect orange mini dress, with bow detail at Awear (£40, €45).

Fur Coats

The fur turns fun of this autumn with oversized Getty coats and makes me actually look forward to the cold. Pictured far right, this American Retro black and grey plume coat (€500) is paired with an Alice + Olivia black jersey top (€90) and these to-die-for By Malene Birger black leather leggings (€670).

The Sam Edelman black stud wedge boots €240 finish off the look . This is one of my favourite looks of the night – it’s quite Isabel Marant inspired.

I’m liking the wedge boots. Are there many new autumn / winter boot trends? I probably should get looking before they are all snapped up!

  2. Claire Says:

Finally a high fashion production in Ireland! Love the edgey vibe…..

Other retailers take note this is how it is done!

Aoifs – funny you should say that, there’s an article in the works for you

  4. Clairebear Says:

Lorraine Keane looks smokin! is that an Alexander McQueen skull clutch I see her holding?

  5. Laura Says:

Well spotted Clairebear, Lorraine is indeed sporting an Alexander McQueen clutch and her jumpsuit is also Alexander McQueen (I have it too) but I think it’s safe to say she’s a fan!!!!

I didn’t think Dublin did such cool shows, I haven’t been to a Harvey Nics show before but normally Dublin Fashion Shows are dull, the same old and safe. Must go to their next show!

  6. Aoifs Says:

Thanks Annemarie, looking forward to it!

  7. Louisa Says:

Thanks Laura, I was just going to pose a comment about whether anyone knew where Lorraine Keane’s jumpsuit is from, and now I know! It is divine.

  8. Laura O'B Says:

anyone know the price point on that blue mc queen jumpsuit that Lorraine Keane is fiercely working?

  9. Annemarie Says:

Hi Laura O’B, it’s 744 euro and available over at Farfetch – McQ by Alexander McQueen

  10. Laura O'B Says:

Damn, out my league at the moment, il keep dreaming……….

  11. Annemarie Says:

Yeah it’s pretty steep alright. There is a black AMcQ one left on Asos for £245, size 8 only, otherwise Asos have lots of jumpsuits, but none as nice as this :(
