Get the look: Gladiator

Inspired by the movie when Russell Crowe ran around scantily clad, Gladiator sandals were first spotted on Naomi Campbell back in 2005. Back then, we hesitated to buy them as they could’ve been a once-off trend, gathering dust in the bottom of your wardrobe after one season –  but last summer saw them conquer again. This masculine take on the sandals is set to back again for summer 2009.  So if you’ve happened to buy a pair, let us know what they are like by posting a comment below. Otherwise, there are gladiator sandals galore out there, so start planning now for the style that suits you.

Pictured here wearing Balenciaga (€5,500), if anyone can pull off this dramatic gladiator boot look, Rihanna can. If you can’t brave this style of gladiator and choose the more traditional ankle level sandal, take a tip from Rihanna to keep the rest of your outfit simple or in one colour, so you can keep the focus on the shoes.

Plastic fantastic

OK, so the name Jelly Sandal doesn’t do anything for them, but there are a number of jelly or plastic gladiator sandals out there. There are not many the team would rave about, but these ones from River Island (pictured, €15) are quite smart and leather like. Team with gold leaf long earrings (also from River Island, €8.99) to complete the look. After all, this look is all about channelling the Julius Cesar thing!

The traditional gladiator sandal has been seen on runways everywhere from Marc Jacobs to Guiseppe Zanotti.  Of course, there are always lookalikes out there for a fraction of the price. This lets you test the “how to wear gladiator sandals” look without spending a fortune: Urban Outfitters (pictured), rock the metallic trend with these pale gold, roman style sandals (€30) which also come in black and bronze.  Penny’s also gives the gladiator sandal awards out in gold, silver and bronze (€18).

Can’t wear flats?

For the heel addicts amongst you, don’t fret as there are plenty of gladiator style heels out there. Sarah Jessica Parker wore these funky, blue and green Balenciaga sandals shopping in New York last year.

So what do you wear with gladiator sandals?

Whether you choose knee high, heels or the more traditional ankle length gladiators, wear with day dresses, short jumpsuits (like Rihanna) or shorts and a classic white tee-shirt. Don’t forget the pedicure!
