Dear Ask the Stylist
I’m seeing so many collars in the shops right now. How do I wear them? Jenny, Wicklow.
Collars are big news at the moment and the trend has gone one step further than collars being part of shirts and dresses – detachable collars is a trend that is set to continue well into the AW12 season and beyond.
This is a great accessory to invest in as it can dress up and bring shirts and dresses already sitting in your wardrobe bang up to date with a fresh look.
Wearing them depends on your personal style, so here are some ideas which are all shop-able and in-store right now:
1. Like a bit of bling on a bargain? Try this diamante collar from Penneys/Primark (€5, 1 pictured) and wear over a plain T-shirt or top. A wow factor night time piece would be a Joanne Hynes collar (€520) you could wear this over a little black dress for example. Keep the focus on the collar by sticking to one colour for the rest of your outfit.
2. A Peter Pan collar, loved by the likes of Emma Watson and Alexa Chung, looks great layered over high neck jumpers or blouses and looks best worn on top of the clothes. Try this luxe gold collar at Accessorize, €26 90 (2 pictured).
Louis Vuitton’s spring summer 12 prim girls wearing broderie anglaise white collars adds a little elegance to any outfit (pictured 4). Wear over a white shirt. You can get the designer look at Brown Thomas or on the high street at Zara, with this lace collar (€14.95 pictured 3).
For a more edgy look, try a spiked or studded collar and wear over T-shirts, dresses or shirts. We love this spiked style from New Look.
Giles Deacon’s AW12 collection (pictured 5) was full of austere, high white collars (just look to how Karl Lagerfeld dresses) and this is a great look for evening worn with your hair up to show off the collar to the full.Tweet
