Ask the Stylist: Chandelier Earrings

I happened to glance at Grainne Seoige’s outfit on the ‘All Ireland Talent Show’ final (March 14th). She had a fab pair of chandelier earrings and I would love to know where they are from?

It also puzzles me as to why there are no clip-on chandelier earrings out there (except Prada ones last year, as far as I have seen in shops & online) as the earrings tend to be quite heavy & drag considerably on my earlobes.

You’re correct in saying that Prada has those fab clip on earrings last year, but Ralph Lauren and Zac Posen were big on chandelier earrings for pierced ears , while 2010 styles are bigger and bolder than ever before – see Spring 2010 Trends.

Not confined to just “chandelier” looking, statement earrings are big, bold, dangly and made up of metals, crystals or stones.  To me they are always on trend, but as they come off and on the catwalks depending on the designer, you’ll not always find them in shops.

Where to buy chandelier earrings (pierced)

Grainne Seoige’s earrings from  the ‘All Ireland Talent Show’ final are from Nijou,  Unit 23 Royal Hibernian Way, Dublin 2 (Tel (01) 6334306) and despite watching a re run of the show, it was hard to catch a true glimpse of her earrings (partly pictured). So you’ll have to make a trip to the shop to check them out in person!

For old Hollywood glamour, try Rhinestones the shop on Suffolk Street Dublin 2 or else raid your Grandmothers’ jewellery box for costume jewels and rhinestones from bygone years. I know my mum is big on clip on earrings as she never pierced her ears but not sure what was the norm back then.

Otherwise, Chica often have statement earrings (pierced) and there’s a beautiful SS10 collection just landed in Brown Thomas by Monica Vinader – Jeweller of the Year in 2009. Pictured are the Rose Gold Vermeil Nugget Zodiac Earring in Blue Cornflower Chalcedony (€350) and the Nugget Cocktail Earring in Black Onyx (€305).

Monica Vinader

There are a few variations in the collection on either silver or rose gold, giving an overall antiquey/vintage feel. Don’t get me started on the Monica Vinader cocktail rings and the large “coin” earrings! (Amazing!).

For online stockists look to Banana Republic who have some great styles (again for pierced).

Don’t let me down

Regarding the dragging down on your earlobes, if buying online you can check the weight. I hate to say so but plastic earrings are lighter than precious metals or real gemstones, so are a “lighter option”. Otherwise, trying on is the only way of knowing, which is difficult as some shops don’t allow for this due to hygiene.

Clip on earrings

One of my most coveted finds is a website called, which specializes in clip-on earrings. Clip-ons are for non pierced pleasure (obviously!) but also suit those with pierced ears who don’t want the earring to drag their earlobe down.

Personally, I’ve bought a considerable amount from this US site, and rave to all my friends about it. There’s not much out there in the form of clip on earrings stockists bar Claires Accessories which can be hit and miss and can hurt lobes after only an hour. An exception to this are hoop clip on earrings, I’ve bought a few pairs in Claires and love them – also for a friend. Every time I pass through Dublin airport I check Claires for new styles.

Not a “pretty” website to look at, prices are cheap on Cliptomania (add shipping to Ireland and buying in numbers helps) and clicking into view enlarged images of the earrings is necessary. Check out their chandelier earrings here – I especially like their “Grecian” styles which I own in gold.

Large earrings to suit your face shape

Large dangling earrings can look so right but it is all in the way you wear them. Whatever you do, let your earrings shine on their own – wear your statement earrings with your hair up or scraped back in a bun, throw on some liquid eyeliner, and you’re ready to go!

Tips to wearing chandelier earrings

Thin and longer faces suit dangly earrings which bell at the bottom to create width.

Round or fuller faces suit oblong earrings that create the impression of a less fuller face.

Small chin? Then opt for shorter earrings that bring the eye up.

The big earrings trend works well on Nicole Richie-esque boho fashion to full-on red carpet glamour, so, whatever your personal style, it’s never a bad time to add a pair of chandelier earrings to your jewellery box!

was in BTs over the past week happened to look at the Monica Vinader … they are almost sold out in all of their stock, the jewllery is beautiful and quite price competitive for semi precious stones.

You can also source online at the her shop on : just its hard to gauge ring sizes so best to know what ring size in advance..

    Hi there,

We have lots of dramatic chandelier earrings in both Chica stores in the Westbury Mall, but if you want an idea of the styles, a selection are available for sale on our online store.

  7. Jackie Says:

Speaking of nice rings and cocktail rings, model Erin Wasson’s new jewellery collection called ‘Low Luv’ is now on – some fab rings or knuckle dusters as i like to call them!

  8. Dee Says:

So glad to hear I am on trend. For anyone going to Madrid..Adolfo Dominguez does accessories as well as clothes and does some great jewellery necklaces and some chandelier type earrings all for about €25-€30. Plain black off shoulder teeshirt and jeans went from cas’ to no-effort-glam by just addng the earrings. Winner way to glam up without looking overdressed!

  9. Annemarie Says:

Hey Dee, are those earrings clip ons or pierced? They sound fab! The other half is in Madrid at the moment but depending on what they are I might ask if he can get a pair! Is it the Adolfo Dominguez on Serrano?

You’re so right. the clothes are fab there at the mo (didn’t know about the earrings so thanks for that!). My sis got a cobalt blue silk top in the Adolfo Dominguez Covent Garden London store recently and says everyone compliments her to death when she wears it.

the Adolfo Dominguez website is crap though, hard to navigate.
