Street Style: Castlepalooza

By Sinead Murtagh’s student blogger Sinead Murtagh headed off to Castlepalooza festival in Tullamore for the August Bank Holiday Weekend.  This is what she had to say for herself.

Castlepalooza was so much smaller than Oxegen, to the extent that when I got there I was a bit disappointed by the lack of stalls, places to go and things to do, but it turned out that the smallness added to the venue- everything was close-by and nobody got lost (and any friends I made there, I bumped into again and again), so the whole place seems safer and friendlier than the bigger festivals do.

The music was great. Even if you hadn’t heard of the bands before there was a good buzz and the crowd was never too big. For fans of the bands playing, there was space enough to squeeze to the front easily so I got to stand right in front of the likes of Fionn Regan and Codes even when I got there late- something I couldn’t even dream of doing at Oxegen.

There were proper toilets (although they had long queues they moved quickly, and there was someone on site to keep the loos clean and filled with toiletroll = HEAVEN). Free, hot showers were available too, although I didn’t use them.

There were one or two small shops selling face paint and hats, an area full of hammocks to have a lie-in (although I think you had to pay to use these) and a bar. One big complaint with the festival was the no “bring-your-own-beer” rule.  The festival said that the “drink is reasonably priced”, but four euro for a can of beer or cider is still expensive.

For those not interested in the music there were plenty of little workshops taking place inside the castle (yes there is a real castle on the grounds of the festival). There was a burlesque workshop, a “circus-skills” one and for those sophisticated people, there was free wine and whiskey tasting.

The Sunday Times had their own tent where people could go and listen to jazz music whilst reading the paper and playing board games, such as scrabble and chess. This sounds silly, but the group I was with ended up spending most of our Sunday in here. There was free tea, coffee and biscuits there after all!

Fashion was relaxed at the festival- some people dressed up a bit whereas most just wore comfy tracksuits. I did see a lot of hats though, trilby hats seem to be everywhere this summer.

Wellies weren’t essential as it was dry and the campsites weren’t big.  They were divided into four small sections- Eenie, Meenie, Minie and Mo. My tent was in Meenie (the cuteness of it!).

Again unlike Oxegen, Castlepalooza doesn’t seem to be cursed with bad weather, so everyone stayed dry and relaxed. The festival was amazing- by FAR the best weekend I’ve had all year, and I’m definitely going back with an even bigger bunch of people next year!
