Ask the Stylist:Wedding LBD

Dear Whatshewears- I need your help!   I am looking for a flattering  LBD to wear during the evening of my wedding (after the big white dress has made its appearance, of course).

As for my body-type, I have a great flabby mid-section which I am trying to conceal, and great long legs that I would like to show off. I am also very broad- shouldered.  I just KNOW that a one-shoulder dress is the style for me.

I have decided to do my shopping on the internet, but all the internet shopping sites I visit are either displaying items that turn out to be out of stock (or I just get dead links). I’ve got my credit card in hand, and I am searching all over the world now. Why can’t I find my dress?

Can your readers find the perfect dress for me- or at least offer some tips for internet shopping?

Dear Frustrated fiancée,

Thanks for sending in your dilemma. You have some great assets to show off, so what you should be looking for is a short, empire line style (cut from the bust so that it flows over your middle rather than fitted) or if you can’t find empire then go for draped.

Avoid anything fitted, cinched at the waist, with a belt, in jersey material (too hugging) or satin (unforgiving to even the slimmest of silhouettes). Length wise go for over the knee or above. I’ve scoured what’s available online at the moment and this is what I think you should go for.

You’re correct in saying that a one shouldered (asymmetric) would be perfect to show off your shoulders, though do consider this one exception – a BCBG halter neck with a difference (pictured, €258). It’s black, short and has that empire lined flow to it.

This  asymmetric dress, also from Edressme, is only available in plum but will give you a guideline for the style of dress you should go for. Edressme used to have rules about selling to those with a USA credit card only, best to check with them for shipping outside of there.

In the draped dress department – (draped is great as it skims your tummy), I came across this “drapey delight with sexy flair” on Victorias Secret. The gold hardware adds some pizzazz for your special occasion, as does the diamante detail on the other dresses. I’ve had a great experience ordering online with Victoria Secret online for my own wedding (party dresses and kaftans to be precise!).

Another draped one I really like is from Edressme (forgive me, but this is THE BEST site for party dresses, black tie and evening wear), is this draped dress with shoulder detail, but alas it’s in navy. (In the picture it looks black).

Alternatively try this one shouldered dress which is neither draped nor empire line and would only flatter if you have a small bosom.

If you like extra glam, then this sequinned dress from Mango is ideal and the shift shape would hide a multitude of sins while still showing off your arms and legs.

Depending on how short you want to go, Maxstudio at House of Fraser’s asymmetric dress (£99) could fit the bill nicely too.

For ordering online:

  • The sizing for each website and sometimes each garment on the website is different. Have your measurements on hand or have yourself measured.
  • You can always return the item but check their returns policy
(Stating the obvious) but factor in the shipping cost on top of the cost of your chosen item
  • Allow yourself enough time for ordering – sometimes they are out of stock, and enough time for returns and re-ordering before your big event.
  • You credit card details etc are safe when given through a verified payments or checkout system. Never disclose your credit card details over email or fax.
  • If the shop has a “bricks and mortar” shop near you, best to try on the item there and then order online, but this isn’t always possible so the returns policy is important.

Now over to you readers for your tips for frustrated financee!

PS Enjoy the wedding x
