Last year I searched high and low for a belted coat only to find none that I liked or that suited me. They were pretty slim on the ground and so I stuck to wearing a coat that I’d bought the previous season.
Truth is, my ideal winter coat IS a belted coat. Why? It’s the shape that suits me most (I’m a petite pear shape so the belt cinches my waist while the single breasted style is more flattering than double, which just makes my chest area frumpy and square).
And as Murphy’s Law would have it, this season, the belted coat is everywhere! Typical.
Here are my top 5 picks for the season:
How to wear it?
Over your party dress or with a blouse and slim trousers. Hell, you’d even get away with wearing it over “nothing special”, so long as you keep it on and buttoned up for the event in question!
1. MaxMara Sargano camel hair coat, €1,103, Matches Fashion
Camel coats are still big news and this one is a favourite of Jessica Alba and Diana Agron. The Glee star keeps her look casual dressing it down and unbelted and teaming it with Prada sunglasses and a Marc Jacobs tee .
2. Diane Von Furstenberg, €775
This blood red wool blend coat features a notched lapel, a belted waist with metallic detailing, two side flap pockets and a long sleeve. A high street option to get this look is the Penney’s “Kate Middleton” number.
3. DRKSHDW by Rick Owens, €850
Belted brushed-cotton and washed-leather coat, I’ll be waiting for the Netaporter winter sale for this investment coat!
4. Fuchs & Schmitt Quilted Belted Coat, €285, Kilkenny Stores
Puffas are always a popular choice and this one’s faux-fur trim adds some extra warmth for the cold weather.
5. ASOS belted mini coat, £95/ €127.78
This wool coat has a wide collar, is fitted and designed with a tailored fit and a midi length. The long sleeves and tan colour mean that it will go with everything.
