Style City: Belfast Part I

So, you’re saving your pennies and are heading across the border to stock up on food and booze? Why not plan a day out and indulge in some retail therapy too?  As much as we want to support locally, some high street shops are still overcharging us down south,  up to 40% more than the sterling price in some cases. Here are some “finds” for your next shopping trip to Belfast. Oh and all these shops are only a stone’s throw away from each other…

1.Tan in a can (€37.50) from Space NK, 5 Donegall Sq North, Belfast.  This apothecary or beauty emporium is an Aladdin’s cave of high-end beauty buys. We love “Tan in a Can”, as recommended by Amanda Wakely London. We have tried this realistic-looking fake tan which adapts to your skin tone. Watch out when applying though, as the spray mist ends up everywhere so watch out bathroom floor!

2. Light Expert by Terry (€43), This fantastic brush foundation is favoured by Danni Minogue giving her that flawless finish.

3. Eva Longoria Parker has worn dresses by Karen Millen on the red carpet at least three times now. Perhaps the “unofficial face of Karen Millen” is outdoing Daisy Lowe’s role? Unfortunately this fringe dress (pictured) sold out last month. The good news is that you are sure to find a fashion forward dress at their shop in the heart of Belfast, and for much less than in the Republic.  Karen Millen, 61 Donegall Place (next door to Space NK).

4. Stock up on skinny jeans galore in Topshop, our number one source for this wardrobe staple. Start off with Dark Wash Skinny Baxter Jean (€45). Topshop, 49/52 Donegall Place, Belfast.

P.S If you’re feeling faint and need a pick-me-up between shops, head to Deane’s Deli, 44 Bedford Street, Belfast (Tel +44 028 9024 8800). Better still book a slap up lunch at their more formal restaurant venue of Deane’s.  This former Michelin star restaurant was voted Best restaurant on the island of Ireland 2007 (Georgina Campbell Guide)  – it’s the best value and foodie experience we’ve witnessed in a long time. Yum!

The Euro sterling thing is ridiculous – many shops in Dublin have ripped the sterling price off the tags. I’ve my eye on a pair of boots – €155 in Dublin, £105 in sterling…pass on the savings please!
