Top 5: Flat Shoes

By Aisling Kennedy

Every girl loves a good heel and as a firm lover of the most killer styles (the higher the better as I’m very short) it is hard to give them up. Walking taller in heels, excuse the cheesy pun, really makes a world of difference making you feel more confident and sexy.

But no matter how comfy we find a pair of heels, after at least four hours those tiny aches and little pains set in.  Worse still, the shoes feel perfect for the entire day and  when it comes to the time to take them off, you’re one twisted toe away from a foot disaster.

Enter the flat shoe. When Nicole Richie says that she’ll never wear stilettos again and will live in flat shoes, it’s time to sit up and take note.

Admittedly, a ballet pump is no sky-scraper stiletto but there are definitely a few styles out there that are practical, pretty and even a bit sexy. The top-five flats below are mainly ballet pup styles but are categorised so that there’s one pair to suit every aspect of your life!

Comfy and practical flat shoes

Everyone needs a kick-about pair of shoes, but hey who said they can’t be stylish too. The Gable white canvas tennis shoes with contrast stitching from French Connection are both perfect and practical.

The idea of wearing canvas usually evokes childhood memories of wearing doodle shoes for me but these flats are far from that. They’re comfy and would look great with either a pair of stone-washed light jeans or this season’s military-style combats.

Nude flat shoes

Ideal for everyday wear, the Martine pumps from Topshop are a must for summer. These little beauts come in blush; a nude colour with the softest touch of rose pink, and nude is bang on trend for this season. The shoe is made from alight suede and the style is finished with a little double tassel on the front of the shoe.

These flats would be ideal with a pastel floral print skirt or a navy blue polka dot dress (New Look is one of many shops with polka dot dresses at the moment.

Nude and natural tones are big news this season, and nude ballerina flats are certainly not excluded from this trend. You’ll find nude colored patent ballerinas with bow detail –in Dunne’s Stores for €9, the best lookalike version of Miu Miu’s ballerinas with the same detailing (bows and patent) that I’ve seen. The Miu Miu ones (€325 on are pictured bottom centre.

Asos also have a lovely blush toned pair, this time with a  black bow.

Work wear ballet flats

It is difficult to find nice pair of practical yet chic shoes for the everyday in and out, back and forth trek to work. The Appollo flats from LK Bennett (pictured centre, £125) are simple and stylish and also come in black.

In appearance they are quite a classic style so there really is no fear of them going out of fashion and they are well worth the little extra cash you would have to spend on them. The shoe has a slightly pointed toe and if the colour black is just not for you the shoe also comes in a soft ‘powder’ colour.

Money to spare

Have cash to burn? For the lucky few who do, Miu Miu’s navy ‘swallow’ print (a detail that was a huge part of their spring summer 2010 collection) flats are worth the splurge. These pumps would look great with Topshop’s feather print grey dress.

This little bird emblem is beautiful and seems to surface every few years, it is a firm favourite of many. Look out for bird detailed necklaces or swallow print tops and dresses which will be everywhere on the high street soon.

Glamorous ballerina pump

For a glamorous ballerina pump check out Office for their beautiful ‘feather pump’ flat. The ballerina style shoe comes in black and teal (pictured right), while the toe is covered in and assortment of purple, black and cream feathers.

And on the plus side there is no fear of anyone taking a tumble down Grafton Street after one too many mojitos in these babies.
