BAFTAS

What a weekend it’s been for red carpet awards ceremonies!  First, we had our very own Irish Film and Television Awards on Saturday night which was followed the BAFTAS, the British equivalent, last night.

Dressing for the red carpet, British actors have it easier in that fashion designers and jewellers literally throw dresses at them, sending them to their homes in the hope that they’ll wear their creations on the red carpet. That is, if they are not already a “muse” for the label already, in the case of Julianne Moore for Tom Ford for example.

In Ireland, it’s the total opposite with IFTA attendees often dressing themselves, or in the case of them having a stylist, they just don’t have the choice that their peers would have across the pond.

The great thing about the IFTAs though, is that Irish designers are often showcased and having an actress wear your design on the red carpet can give a young designer that, up until then may have been under the radar, the chance to be on the tip of everyone’s tongues within 24 hours.

Comparisons aside, here are some of our favourites from last night’s BAFTA Awards.

Kimberly Walsh

Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh wore a lace Ashish dress with a plunging neckline, with a sparkling snowflake overlay. Walsh was kept busy on the red carpet, as she was covering the event for Orange, one of the BAFTA’s sponsors.

Jessica Alba

Jessica Albas dress was a cobalt blue strapless Versace which she added her own boho touch to with a chunky necklace and plaited hair.

Thandie Newton

Thandie looked ever stunning in a floral pink strapless Monique Lhullier dress.

Tilda Swinton

The Tux Suit is certainly having its heyday, and a lot of it is due to this lady.  As ever, Swinton, looking very elegant we thought, broke with red carpet tradition and wore a black Haider Ackermann suit.

Julianne Moore

Eva Green and Julianne Moore both wore Tom Ford, the fashion designer’s first women’s collection everyone’s been waiting for him to make and which finally came to pass this season.

Julianne even modelled the collection at an uber exclusive Tom Ford Womenswear preview, where no cameras, iPhones, tweets or disclosure was allowed, adding further kudos to the label.
