Ask the Stylist: Lace

Dear Ask the Stylist

I’m looking for an alternative to sequins and glitter this party season, can you suggest something? M.

Yes, some lovely lace.

It’s sexy, girlie, prim and proper and is always in fashion. This year it is being worn in all sorts of ways, thanks to the Christopher Kane and Dolce & Gabbana’s AW 10 runways.

The easiest way to wear lace, in my opinion, is via a shirt or top.

This lace shirt at Autograph by Marks & Spencer’s (60 euros, £45), which I picked up on Saturday, is just perfect. Wear it with streamlined pieces such as a skirt or menswear inspired trousers – the more adventurous amongst you can wear with shorts, a leather skirt or leather trousers !

If you’ve a post work party or gathering, wear your lace shirt under a suit jacket which you can ditch to take your look from office to out mode in an instant.

For a lace top – Karen Millen have the most divine lace top (125 euro) in store right now – take some inspiration from Sarah Harding (pictured) who wears her lace top with a black trousers and blazer.

Lace Dress

Another option is a Lace Dress.

A key piece for any wardrobe is a LBD, and a lace version is eternally fashionable while remaining completely classic.

Emma Watson (pictured) wore a beautiful £4000 dress by Spanish designer Rafael Lopez to the Harry Potter premiere the other day but you don’t need to spend that to replicate her look.

You’ll be spoiled for choice in the shops right now and my personal favourites include Jaeger (£650) for a mad men inspired style and Wallis for just a little a peek a boo.

And finally, as lace is intricate enough in itself, keep accessories to a minimum.

I have to say that I L.O.V.E Emma Watsons dress and whole look at the Harry Potter premier! And I adore her hair! It really takes her from the schoolgirl look she had as Hermione.
Love the idea of a lace blouse to go from day to night. Now I just have to find something exciting to go to post work!!

well we will have to work on the post work bash then! Yes, doesnt Emma just look divine? I was unsure about her cropped hair when she first got it done, but love it now! Warehouse also had a gorgeous lace blouse but it’s sold out :(
