Shopwatch: Arnotts

By Siobhan Lam

The fashion sphere seems to revolve in a completely different time zone to the rest of the world.

Take fashion magazines – they usually publish an issue in the first couple of days of the month (July) but the month actually printed on the issue is of the next month (August).

Fashion designers are busy showing their autumn/winter collections just as we attempt the tepid waters of Brittas Bay and dare to bare our legs without the aid of black tights.

Arnotts autumn/winter 2010 collection

This fashion fast-forwarding used to annoy and confuse me but after viewing the autumn/winter 2010 collection from Arnotts this week – all confusion is gone and only lust remains.

Unbeknownst to many, Arnotts stock some of the most cutting edge labels around such as Vivienne Westwood’s Anglomania, Reiss, Pinko, and (ethical brand) People Tree and Paige.

Since their mammoth revamp, this department store really has become the to-go-spot for the all round shopping venture.

For next season, Arnotts have embraced a dark and sophisticated look but with a cheeky twist.

The Vivienne Westwood Anglomania’s big grey cardigan/coat (coatigan as some call it) had every stylist in the room all a fluster despite its expensive price tag (€450).  This is an investment piece that will always turn heads and will work with virtually any outfit.

However, the labels that really demanded my own attention were NW3 and Tara Jarmon.

NW3 is the contemporary and slightly more playful sister of heritage label Hobbs. Their checked blazer with navy trim detail (pictured €205) is the definition of geek-chic and teamed with skinny dark-navy jeans and tan brogues means that my winter go-to outfit is sorted already!

Tara Jarmon

Tara Jarmon has a similar aesthetic to NW3 but with a heftier price tag.  Such details are all forgotten when you see the cut or feel the fabric of these clothes, and just like Anglomania this label has investment written all over it.

People that know me, know that I am slightly obsessed with the film ‘Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events’, not because of its twisted storyline, oh no, because of the costumes – specifically because of Violet’s Victorian powder-blue perfect coat.

Much to my dismay, I have never been able to find anything similar to it – that was until I saw Tara Jarmon’s collection. This navy double breasted coat (€450), with velvet collar and military details is as close as I will ever get to Violet’s coat and so it must be mine. You see my shopping logic?

Arnotts Accessories

As well as this, the accessories range for autumn/winter is fabulous.

Mischa Barton Handbags

Mischa Barton’s handbag range comes up trumps again. Despite the celebrity name tag – this really is a professional and varied collection.

The doctor’s bag in tan (pictured) is beyond adorable with a definite vintage feel and more pockets than anyone in their right mind could ever need and very reasonable at €105.

Love Moschino

The Love Moschino range is classic yet utterly quirky – the Home bag (pictured) is basically a better priced version (€170) of Chanel’s quilted 2.55, with a similar chain strap detail and twist clasp.

If this talk is far too pre-emptive for you, come autumn all these key pieces will be long gone, so don’t say that I didn’t warn you!
