Guest Editor: Annmarie O’Connor

On her blog (iblogfashion.blogspot.com), Annmarie O’Connor describes herself as a fashion writer, stylist and professional talker. Today, she’s joined WhatSheWears.ie to chat about autumn trends, her beloved Dries Van Noten shoes and her favourite shops in Dublin.

Hailing from New York—the slickest of all the fashion capitals—Annmarie is a veritable fashion aficionado and is one of the most reputable voices in the Irish fashion industry. As well as a regular column with The Irish Examiner, her work can be found in Image and The Dubliner, along with international publications such as Elle and Dazed and Confused.

Androgynous with some romantic twists best describes Annemarie’s style. In her own words, she sums it up as “‘Lots of leather’; although ‘Hit or Miss’ would probably be more appropriate some mornings!”

Her number one style tip is: “Defer to your body shape. It’s the best GPS you can rely on.”

With a book in the pipeline, which we´re simply dying to get our hands on, read on to hear some more of Annemarie’s words of wisdom on all things stylish.

The spring/summer 2012 designer collections she liked most at London Fashion Week

I loved Paul Smith’s laissez-faire tailoring parlayed in grown-up colour groupings like turquoise, navy and chartreuse.

Simone Rocha’s innovative use of fabrics like Perspex, plastic and treated lace has made her the one to watch; while Joanne Hynes’ foiled appliqué leather jackets layered over sequin Lurex tube skirts with latex stockings had me giddy with excitement!

Her favourite autumn/winter 2011 designer collection

I styled for Joanne Hynes at LFW last February and fell in love with her crystal collars. My AW 11 must-haves also include Karl Donoghue shearling coats and Dries Van Noten printed skirts (pictured right).

Favourite trend this season and how she’ll be wearing it

I’ve always been partial to mixing masculine and feminine references, so the androgynous trend suits me perfectly. I’ll be pairing tailored shirts with leather pencil skirts and oversized blazers with boyfriend jeans and heels.

The best high street shop

I’m a huge fan of COS and stalk the BT2 concession on a bi-weekly basis. The minimalist aesthetic has a Bauhaus feel which always looks sharp; perfect for daily go-to garments.

The shop in Dublin she considers a ‘hidden gem’

Smock is my favourite haunt and purveyor of some of my key fashion finds including a Veronique Branquinho oversized blazer, Acne tuxedo trousers and Dries Van Noten shoes.  I’ve also nabbed an amazing vintage military jacket with original frogging at 9 Crow Street.

Her signature make-up look

Pale polished skin, strong brows, and lots of lippie.

The shoes she can’t live without

I live in my Dries Van Noten pony skin shoes and my trusty Converse. I’m also wearing ankle-high cowboy boots which look great with maxi skirts.

What she carries as she runs between fashion meetings

I love my Vivienne Westwood leather bowling bag (pictured) which I bought a few years ago in Smock boutique for daywear – it’s virtually indestructible.

My metallic Pauric Sweeney bag fits the bill for smart casual and I use a Joanne Hynes leopard print clutch for evenings out.

Her signature scent

I wear Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue. I am partial to Calvin Klein’s Truth but they don’t sell it anymore in Ireland. I usually stock up in the Duty Free or in London when I’m over.

Hairstyle

O´Connor  likes to style her instantly recognisable hairdo in two ways; short and gamine with a side-parting or upstyled in a rockabilly coif.
