Muse of the Month: Anna Friel

I thought that British actress Anna Friel has become quite the style icon this year and so crowned her our December Muse of the Month.

Ever since that famous lesbian kiss, she’s been known as “Brookside’s Anna Friel” but since then (16 years ago!), she has appeared on Broadway, in a Hollywood blockbuster opposite Will Ferrell and has spent the past two years living in LA with her partner David and daughter Gracie.

Perhaps the first time this year that Anna caught my eye was at the Cartier Polo Tournament in the UK when she wore an amazing black Antonio Berardi AW 2009 dress with Chanel sunglasses and a croc handbag. I love the flattering neckline of it and together with the structured shoulders; it’s a really chic look.

Posh is also a fan of Antonio Berardi who is for sale over at Browns Fashion. (Who coincidentally start their online sale on Christmas day) but alas this dress isn’t on there. Clothes Peg Boutique in Sutton is the only Irish stockist of Antonio Berardi, it’s worth giving them a call on 01 8321130 if you really want this LBD for yourself!

On the red carpet, Anna wore another little black dress – this time a one shoulder dress by Ana Sekularac which you can buy at Harrods of London for £795, €894 9 (pictured far right).

In November I went to see Anna Friel in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in London’s Haymarket theatre. She played a brilliant Holly Gollightly and ironically her makeup on stage and off is practically the same.  She always keeps her skin pale and her lips matte and red – it’s such a great combination with dark hair.

Anna Friel’s vintage dresses

It is her style leaving the theatre each night that’s mesmerised the fashion pack – she pulls off the old-school glamour look time and time again. Her leaving the theatre outfits are mainly vintage dresses or tea dresses from Topshop. She also likes the odd top from Topshop such as this striped one pictured far left.

Friel admits that she keeps a stack of heels and hats in her room at the Theatre to keep fans and the paparazzi entertained!

Anna often picks up on-off pieces from the Vintage art fair in Clerkenwell, London. Vintage junkies love this fair because it has loads of samples by designers such as Alexander McQueen – Anna spent £8000 in one visit to the fair according to the organisers.

Cold Weather Chic

As the rest of us rush to layer up for the cold weather, some of our favourite fashionistas are reaching for one particular coat to keep them looking haute: leopard. Kate Moss is known to dust her leopard print coat down each year as soon as the temperature drops and Friel has recently joined this mob, spotted leaving the theatre in a vintage leopard print coat and leather trousers.

I look forward to seeing more of this sassy style from Anna Friel in 2010.
